Possibly pregnant but smear test this week??

Dh and I are TTC and did VERY well this past month if I do say so myself, so I'm potentially pregnant and going to be testing this weekend, but have a smear test booked before the end of the week.

I'm about 11DPO today, will be 13DPO on the day of the smear test. I read somewhere that you shouldn't get a smear done if you're pregnant? But no clue if that's true or if it applies to being this early (if I even AM pregnant!).

Should I test tomorrow? I kind of doubt a positive would even show up that early, so maybe not even worth it. I don't want to cancel the smear if at all possible, obviously. What would you do?

I’d test the day before and take it from there.

I was in this position last summer- the nurse told me the smear wouldn't affect anything and could go ahead regardless- but it was up to me if I wanted to rebook. I decided to just go ahead as it had taken a while to get the appointment.

You can't get a smear when you're pregnant because the cells of the cervix change or something, you also can't have one after a miscarriage or post partum until after 12 weeks. I don't know how it works in very early pregnancy though ? I would call the surgery and ask to be honest !
Good luck btw !

If this was me i would ring the doctors and talk to them first, are they aware of you and your husband ttc. If they are and it has been a long journey then they will do everything to support. I do know of a friend who was worried and the doctor gave her a pregnancy test first not sure if she had the smear after it came back positive or not though.
Do whatever feels comfortable for you, you can always rebook the smear once you have been given more information xxx

I’ve accidentally had smears before testing in both of my pregnancies. No issues, my cervix did bleed a little in one, I assume it was more sensitive.

kirinm · 07/03/2023 10:59

I had two smear tests during pregnancy as I had a lot of very unexplained bleeding. The only reason you 'can't' have smear tests is because they're so inaccurate there's no point.

Anyway, just push it back and if you are pregnant, leave it until you're not.

givememarmite · 07/03/2023 11:01

I have had smears done at the start of two pregnancies. I'm not in the UK though and maybe the guidance is different, but my gynaecologist assured me it was not an issue (both times I was around 6 weeks). I would try and contact someone where you are having the smear done and ask if they would still do it if you are pregnant.

Lheuredubebe · 07/03/2023 11:02

Haven't been trying for very long at all, think this is our 3rd cycle or so now. I guess the best thing is to just ask her, then! She'll be the first to know that we're trying 😁

I should also add that I was pregnant- abnormal
Cells were found and I have a cervical biopsy at colposcopy (all whilst pregnant). All is ok but so glad I went ahead with smear.

Lheuredubebe · 07/03/2023 11:03

I'll keep the appointment regardless as I have other things I want to speak to her about, so will decide at the appointment itself based on her advice. Thank you :)

Yeah this is also kind of what I'm thinking. If I am pregnant, I don't want the added stress of wondering if there was something abnormal there that then won't be found for ages so if the doctor is all good with it going ahead, then that suits me fine!

Yes see what the advice is and go from there Grin It took 6 months from the date of smear for me to actually have the colposcopy so I was white far on into the pregnancy by then! You will be fine, good luck!

atthebottomofthehill · 07/03/2023 11:08

If I was you I'd go. At this early in pregnancy it won't have any negative effect nor will the cells be much different.

I can assure you that after having a baby you will NOT feel like going for a smear test for ages. And because you'll be overdue one the nhs will badger you / you may well worry.

Just be thankful to have this chance to get it out of the way

PacmanIsLost · 07/03/2023 11:12

I had a smear at 8 weeks, dr knew I was pregnant and no issues.

MrMarkham · 07/03/2023 11:24

You can't have one for a while after having a baby (can't remember exactly) so if you don't go and are pregnant then it means it will be very overdue when you finally have it.

You have to have a test mid cycle so presumably loads of women who are ttc are in the exact situation when they have a smear. Just get it done I'd say.

Yes, indeed! I'm already getting it a couple of months later than initially planned because of loads of unplanned circumstances and the doctor changing surgery, so it's already been on my mind for 2 months and I'm bored of it 😂

i was only a few week’s pregnant when due a smear and they wouldn’t do one until after baby was born. I’m not sure about if you haven’t found out yet. Fwiw I got my positive at 11dpo so maybe do a test the morning of the appointment.

Rudens · 07/03/2023 15:22

I was 3 weeks pregnant when I had my smear test, I had no idea I was pregnant. And my results were normal

Happygirl54321 · 07/03/2023 20:02
