One test says pregnant, two Clear Blues say not pregnant

Hi mumsnetters,

Slightly confused and baffled. Been feeling a bit odd and missed my period so decided to just stick a pregnancy test in the loo after weeing and it came back as positive.

My husband ran out to get a few more tests and both Clear Blue tests took ages and I mean ages to load, I could only get a small bit of wee out on the first one (sorry if tmi) and the second time I weed in a cup and dunked it in. Both came back as negative.

I’m quite confused. What does this mean? Has this ever happened to you before?

thanks very much

If you stuck a test in the toilet bowl I wouldn't take the result as is.

Maybe get the same test but wee on it this time/dunk it in a cup of wee?

Hi! I’m no expert but I understand (from the many hours of browsing this page), that some tests are more sensitive than others. Particularly the first response are the most sensitive, so could pick it up earlier? I think if you’re referring to it loading it might be a digital which need higher concentration levels of HCG. Also the timing of your pee, the first morning is supposed to be the highest? Maybe that’s got something to do with it?

id check again in a day or two with a first response early detection, first pee!

hoping you get the result you want. Do please keep us updated!! As a serial browser it is sad when we don’t get the answer to the question 🤣

Thanks both, think I’ll leave it for a few hours and try again later today and maybe in the morning.

the first test had just been sitting in our bathroom for ages so perhaps it was out of date!

I’d be much more inclined to trust the recently purchased clear blue that was properly administered rather than the very old test dipped in to the toilet bowl

allgoodthings84 · 10/01/2023 12:55

Ignore a dipped in the toilet bowl test for now. It may also be too early for a digital and you squeezed a wee out for them when you need to have a good hold at this stage (no drink or weeing) for a few hours. That’s why they say morning first wee is best as been holding all night.

Try a first response early test as these are the most sensitive. Pee in a clean dry cup if possible as it is the easiest way to make sure you don’t flood the test or pee on the wrong bit by accident.

good luck 😊

Ok I feel really silly now after reading up on this 🙈 looks like it was just an evaporation line by the looks of it!

we have a little ten month old anyway so it would have been quite a surprise if I was. Thanks to everyone for replying!

That's a positive test?

Bournetilly · 10/01/2023 14:15

That doesn’t look like an evap line it looks positive, did the second line show within the time frame?
Id do another one in a couple of hours or in the morning but wee into a pot.

jamoncrumpets · 10/01/2023 14:31

That's not how you use a pregnancy test, OP 🙈

Klow15 · 10/01/2023 14:35

I wouldn’t get another clear blue. I’d get just your normal first response one from like the chemist or wilkos.

seen A LOT of people saying they’ve had false results from the clear blue ones

& when you get them do it as a dip test. Pee in a cup again and hold the test in for 10 seconds. That’s what I did when I found out with all 3 of mine & if you’re still unsure and keep getting different results then ask for a blood test from your gp! 😋

HopefulRose · 10/01/2023 14:54

@Bournetilly I’m not sure I just know I checked it before I used it then the two lines showed up. It’s so confusing!

@jamoncrumpets i know, I know 🙈

@Klow15 thank you, I’ll give that a try. Think I’ll wait until the morning now as I did four after the first one and they’ve all said negative so seems conclusive for now. Strange!

thanks for your advice :)

rainbowstardrops · 10/01/2023 14:57

Definitely wait until the morning and do a first wee properly!

Bells3032 · 10/01/2023 15:03

three possibilities

  1. the first one is wrong and its a false positive (the pee in the toilet would need to be very concentrated)
  2. the first one is right but cos you did the other ones on a later wee and not first morning wee then it's not high enough to show on the less sensitive tests
  3. your are much further than you think and it resulted in the "hook" and the toilet water diluted your pee enough to get a positive.

I'd take another one. have your periods been very regular since birth? I'm a year PP and mine are still all over the place

HopefulRose · 10/01/2023 15:13

@rainbowstardrops thanks lovely I will do and will update this thread too in case anyone else finds themselves in this situation in future 🙈

🤞🏻 it's the result that you want! 💐

HopefulRose · 10/01/2023 15:23

@Bells3032 thanks Bells, it is puzzling.

my periods have been all over the place, I have PCOS so that doesn’t help either. My last period was early December and I was due to come on around the 5th according to the cycle tracker.

How'd this morning go @HopefulRose

HopefulRose · 11/01/2023 18:36

@Bells3032 two big fat negative tests so thinking that first one was just a weird fluke!

OP posts:
Bells3032 · 11/01/2023 19:08

Sorry to hear. Hope you're ok

HopefulRose · 11/01/2023 19:45

@Bells3032 thank you xx
