Positive tests but no baby

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 04:30

I have now had 6 positive tests, however when I went for a scan they were unable to see anything from either an abdominal or internal scan. 2 of these tests were taken whilst I was there (and positive).

I do take promethazine which can cause false positives however would it cause this many?

I do not feel pregnant at all and witb the date of my last period I should be around 6 weeks.

I am absolutely petrified of potential ectopic pregnancy. I have an appointment on Friday for a scan and bloods, I’ve had no pain etc or bleeding.

any help would be appreciated!

Have the done blood tests to see a change in hcg levels?

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 04:47

I’m waiting for them on Friday but I’m now absolutely terrified of what it could be if not pregnant

I mean, presumably it would be the promethazine? Because you're taking that and it can give false positives?

Hugasauras · 08/11/2022 18:53

I do take promethazine which can cause false positives

I don't get it - surely it's just cos of this?

Yes, surely it’s because of this? I don’t understand what you mean by ‘this many’. Did you stop taking it for a while so it’s out of your system and still tested positive?

Lillybobs86 · 08/11/2022 19:05

I regularly take Promethezine and I have never had a false positive.
Surely if you've worked out you would be 6 weeksthat means you haven't had a period for 8 weeks - did I understand that correctly?
If you've not had a period for 8 weeks and you've got a few positive pregnancy tests - surely must be pregnant? 🤔

Proamble · 08/11/2022 19:11

But at 6w they should be able to see something, even just an empty sac. As someone who has had so many early scans due to miscarriages, if you’re testing positive they should see something. The only time they haven’t is when I had an ectopic. I don’t think you can really know until after the results from the 2nd bloods come through. They did mine at the scan when they couldn’t see anything, got the results a few hrs later, then they repeated 48hrs and hadn’t quite doubled. They did this every 2days until they found the ectopic.

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:16

No, but i don’t take it daily. I was unsure if it would make every single test a false positive. Sorry if I’m not making much sense I’m incredibly stressed

I really don’t know, I’m clutching at straws, the idea of a potential ectopic and surgery terrifies me

It’s so unlikely you’ll need surgery honestly! And even if you do it only reduces chances of conception by such a small amount!! It’s amazing how our bodies work, the tube can just float to the other ovary. Honestly I don’t think I really knew how amazing our bodies are until I went through this and read up. I was petrified too, I had an ectopic and had the injection and it was fine as they caught it early. No side effects, everything back to normal, still have all my tubes and ovaries. Please don’t worry!!

SouperNoodle · 08/11/2022 20:30

I'm sorry you're going through this! I really hope you get some answers and good news xx

Lillybobs86 · 08/11/2022 20:32

I don't think it's the promethezine I think your pregnant.

My ectopic was discovered at 6 weeks, until then they couldn't see anything suspicious, only just about could see a tiny small shadow of something slightly abnormal the day I turned 6 weeks.

Yes I agree with above the only way is blood test comparisons, although that won't tell the location of the pregnancy just the rate it's developing, it's a waiting game unfortunately for something to show up on the scan.

Did they do bloods after the scan?

I feel for you I went through all of this in the summer and the wait and the unknown was horrendous.. I hope you get some answers and that they look into this thoroughly.

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:32

I’ll be honest this wasn’t a planned pregnancy I am on contraception which I take religiously, the idea of being pregnant alone terrifies me - let alone with complications.

Do you mind me asking did you have pregnancy symptoms? I’ve had nothing x

OP posts:
Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:33

No, I’ve had an abdominal and internal scan and they said they couldn’t see anything so have referred me on to the early pregnancy unit x

Yes I can understand that - I was the same quite terrified.
You don't know for sure as yet so don't panic about that now, wait to see what the experts and bloods say and they will do more internal scan at epu.
I would call the epu and ask for the appointment to be brought forward.

In regards to the op I was also very scared but I was told if I didn't go for surgery within a few hours I would be dead so all the worry of that goes away when it comes to it, your life is more important, and it's all very safe and quick.
But like I said don't worry about that now as only the experts at the epu can diagnose you we can only offer our support and experiences x

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:47

I have absolutely no symptoms, of a pregnancy or an ectopic pregnancy. It’s the weirdest situation ☹️

OP posts:
Hugasauras · 08/11/2022 20:49

I wouldn't worry too much.

You are taking a medication that can cause false positives.

A scan has found no evidence of pregnancy.

You have no symptoms.

You have reliably been taking contraception.

The most likely conclusion is that it's a false positive caused by the medication. A quick Google shows that it is indeed a thing with that medication. Hopefully you'll get some clarity after the blood tests Flowers

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:51

My only other option is a chemical pregnancy as I had some very minimal bleeding when I went to the toilet a couple of times on the 12th October.

However, would I still be having positive pregnancy tests?

My scan appointments were for a termination (please no judgment I have extremely
valid reasons) - so this is just terrifying as I want the situation to stop.

I know obviously these are all questions to ask on Friday. But my mind is running away with me. I’m terrified

OP has not had a period for 8 weeks .. I think that's a symptom

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:52

Thank you I’m hoping this is all it is. I also have a fear of blood tests just to top all this off!

Never been so stressed in my life x

I had a pregnancy of unknown location in April/May. I was getting positive pregnancy tests and had HCG levels floating around 300 for a week or so. Because they couldn't see anything on the scan I had methotrexate injections, that stopped the pregnancy from growing (wherever it was) and after 3 months I was back to normal

If they can't see anything on a scan it's highly unlikely they would decide to operate as they wouldn't know where to look.

Please try not to worry, I know it's easy to say, but if the doctors were that worried about you then you'd be being seen sooner and more urgently xxx

Blanketwars · 08/11/2022 20:57

OP who do you have supporting you? Is there anyone around to be with you?

You’re obviously very very stressed and sound like you’re wound up tighter than a tick. Have you any family or a support worker you can call?

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 21:02

@Blanketwars i have my friends and the father is being incredible, but nobody can be at the appointment with me on Friday as its a very early time. I also don’t want to drive anyone mad with the thousands of questions I have. I am going to question if there is any support available as I’m absolutely beside myself, this wait is horrific. I slept an hour last night, I’m running on propranolol and adrenaline I think.

I live alone so have a fear I’ll just collapse and no one will know lol. Im never ever like this and usually very level headed so it’s scary. MSI is who referred me and they haven’t been particularly helpful.

Just so glad I have no pregnancy symptoms and don’t feel unwell.

i really appreciate your support thank you x
