Safe to take iron if you aren’t deficient?

Hey all,

i would like to start taking Pregnacare conception vitamins to prepare for pregnancy a few months before, however I noticed that the tablets all contain a whole daily dose of iron.

I had blood tests done and I am not deficient in iron, they are in normal levels. I heard that having too much iron isn’t healthy - so would it be safe for me to take these tablets?

Has anyone been in this situation also?
I am sure that not everyone who takes these is iron deficient, so I am guessing it should be fine, but I prefer to check….

I would appreciate any of your thoughts!

Your body will just get rid of what it doesn’t need via urine or faeces.

The dose in prengnacare wouldn’t do much anyway. People who are deficient in iron have to take iron tablets on top of prenatal vitamins

I read that water soluble vitamins like B vitamins, vitamin C etc are excreted when there’s too much of it but not all vitamins do that. I just checked if iron falls into this category and it looks like it doesn’t, apparently the body stores excess iron in other organs which might become toxic if too much builds up.
In this case I would be a bit worried about consuming too much of it…

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry. Like I said, the iron in those tablets are almost negligible.

It’s why proper iron deficient women have to take pure iron tablets

I did, but they didn’t agree with me so I tried spatone instead. This was on top of my pre natal vitamins. The doctor still wanted me to take other iron but I didn’t
