Colposcopy / possible biopsy or LLETZ

Had abnormal cells at my most recent smear so have been waiting for an appointment for a colposcopy.

Just had one through for later this week and was pleased until I saw that it's recommended you don't have sex for six weeks after a LLETZ and some places I read you shouldn't TTC until you have another smear or biopsy results which could mean waiting another six months.

Feel absolutely gutted that I'm going to miss probably two more cycles minimum and maybe even six. Really, really gutted.

It's really affecting my mental health already not having had any success TTC yet, for around a year now, and we wanted to try the SMEP this month. I'm mid thirties and every month feels like my chance is fading. Not sure how I'll cope if it fades completely. Well I won't cope really.

Not even sure why I'm posting. Has anyone else had a colposcopy and had to consider all this?

Hi @monsteramunch I'm going through something similar than you at the moment. I have been TTC for more than a year now, had 2 miscarriages (September and December 2021), and no sign of pregnancy since then.

End of July I had my smear. The results came back with HPV positive and abnormal cells detected. I was devastated, I had no idea what that really meant and what was going to happen, I was so not prepared for that... I had a colposcopy 2 weeks later, they took 2 biopsies and told me it looked like CIN1. Results arrived 4 weeks later (beginning of September), it is actually CIN2/3 and they recommended LLETZ treatment. I had to wait another month to get it done, it was 6 days ago (last Thursday) and I'm now waiting for the results (they told me 3/4 weeks).

I completely understand your worries, I have been really depressed when I realised I had to stop TTC until all this is behind me. I am 38 and have no child. They were really lovely and understanding at the hospital and this is what they told me: no sex for 4 weeks, and waiting for the results to start TTC again. Which means 4 weeks after treatment I can try again if the results are good (meaning if the cells removed have clear margins, which would mean they have removed all the transformed cells and I don't need further treatment). Then I will have a control test in 6 months, but they told me there is no need to wait for that to start TTC again. I'm now 3 weeks from maybe being able to try again (a bit anxious waiting for the results at the moment 🤞), and it will be 3 months in total without TTC.

I know it's not that much, and I will feel really relieved when I start again that this is behind me. But it feels like an eternity, especially when you have been trying for so long and are not very young, each cycle counts 😓 so I totally get your worries. Feel free if you want to talk about it, I'm here, I have felt very lonely in all this...
Take care ❤️

@ArcEnCiel2022

I am so, so sorry I missed your lovely reply!

Im sorry you're going through the same thing but thank you so much for understanding.

It's completely what you said, every month feels like the possibility gets less and less which is a horrible experience.

I so appreciate you sharing the guidelines they gave re sex and TTC timings, that's really useful for me to have in mind when I'm talking to them and asking these questions.

I've got my colposcopy (plus I imagine at minimum a biopsy and perhaps a LLETZ) tomorrow so will let you know how it goes and would also love to know when you get your results.

Will be sending you the best of luck Flowers

@monsteramunch

I'm so sorry I missed your reply too! I came to give an update, and I just saw you had answered, I don't know why I didn't get a notification!

How are you doing? How was the colposcopy? Did they take a biopsy or LLETZ? I hope everything went well ❤️

I'm now 3 weeks post LLETZ and I'm good! I think I have been really lucky because I didn't have any bleeding. I just had some weird brown discharge for 10 days, but that was not too bad. Now I feel completely normal, and my period started yesterday just on time (they told me it could be early or delayed, but that wasn't the case for me).

I didn't get the letter with the results yet, but today they appeared on my NHS app, and it just says CIN 1, with no more details. I'm a bit surprised as after the first biopsy they came back 2/3! I don't really understand how that's possible, but I guess it's good news! 🤞 I will wait to have the letter to see if they tell me more and to be sure I can relax. I can't wait to TTC again!

I hope you are doing well, give me some news if you see this 💞
