5 weeks 6days scan, no yolk sac

Hi mums. My 5 weeks 6 days scan showed GS measuring 1cm. Dr asked me to come back after a week or 2. I can see a small white dot in GS. I asked the Dr what is it? Did not give me an answer, just asked me to come back after a week or 2. I have regular 27-28 days cycle. I was tracking my ovulation, so I know I ovulated on CD14. Should I expect the worst?

Hi, are you sure about the dates? If so they should be able to see a yolk sac from memory (i had one at exactly 5 weeks with my last pregnancy as ?ectopic). I recently had a scan at exactly 6 weeks (from LMP) and this is what it looked like. Have they checked serum HCG levels? If you go back next week then they should be able to give you an answer.

@Koalafaith did you get an abdominal scan? That early on its difficult to see what's going on if the scan is done via the belly.

Koalafaith · 03/10/2022 23:55

@Vinyasa474 Thank you for sharing. I did not check for HCG, asked me come back after 2 weeks.

@Sunshine085 It was a transvaginal scan

@Koalafaith did the ultrasound technician zoom in at all? It seems very far away.

Koalafaith · 04/10/2022 01:18

@Sunshine085 It was done by a Gynaecologist. He did not zoom in to try to look at the white line. I saw it on the screen and pointed out to him asking what is the white thing, is it a yolk sac? He replied saying I am not sure, it is too early to say anything and come back after 2 weeks. The country I am in, Beta hcg is not checked. I zoomed in the image and clicked a pic again. Do you think the resolution of the scan is not good enough?

@Koalafaith even at 6 weeks (I'm 11 weeks tomorrow) there was nothing visible in my sac, no pole no yolk sac, nothing... Went back at 7 weeks on the dot and bam! There was an embryo with a heartbeat... It's been a long struggle but please don't give up hope.

bishbashboosh1 · 04/10/2022 20:53

i work at a scan clinic this is probably totally normal. we don’t even scan before 6 weeks for this reason because it’s so hit and miss whether we see anything or not. please try not to worry!

Sunshine085 · 04/10/2022 21:32

@Koalafaith I am not a professional but during my scans they always zoomed in. As others said, at 6 weeks it's difficult to see much. Fingers crossed for a positive scan in a week. Keep us updated!

Releasethehoundss Wow!! What a difference in one week. Thank you for sharing your experience. Wish you happy and safe pregnancy 😊. I will probably go for a follow-up scan at 8 weeks.

@Koalafaith hoping your scan goes well and try to keep positive because I was dead sure (based on everything I read about B/O etc) that it was going to end in a MC/blighted ovum, after having already had three... I still cannot believe this pregnancy is sticking and I hope very much so that the case is the same for you ❤.

Releasethehoundss · 05/10/2022 03:14

@bishbashboosh1 I forgot to add that I wish I'd had someone like you weeks ago when I was going through empty sac limbo... I have children already so was shocked when I started having miscarriages and the Drs. couldn't figure out why... So when I had a tad bit bleeding with this pregnancy, it sent alarm bells ringing and I WISH I'd had someone like you to tell me to calm down because it's COMPLETELY normal to see nothing at all at 5+ weeks. All of the advice on the net and even on these forms and the blogs written by professionals tell you that there should be a yolk sac and pole visible by 5 weeks on the dot and that just wasn't the case for me at all! I spent weeks agonizing from the 5 week mark (when I started bleeding) til the 7th when we heart a heartbeat, finally, expecting a MC. As of now my little nug is safely ensconced in my uterus and there aren't any issues detected (except for the fact that that he/she refuses to be seen on a transvaginal scan but that's another story). So, @Koalafaith please keep a positive outlook because things are very early and everything could be perfectly fine.

Releasethehoundss Thank you very much for your reassurance. My 1st pregnancy ended at 6.1 weeks back in 2018. 2nd pregnancy (my 4.5 year old, born in 2018), during 2nd pregnancy I saw a GS and YS at 5.6 weeks but this time at 5.6 weeks only GS, got me worried because I was tracking my ovulation and I ovulated on CD 14. I want to go back for rescan at 7 weeks but my hubby is discouraging me to go back at 7 weeks. I am 40 and my Dr had informed me even before I conceived that I am susceptible for miscarriage cos of my age. I waited for 4 year after my son was born as I am in Grad school and need to submit my thesis by end of Dec 2022. I feel its all my mistake to wait for this long to have 2nd baby. I was unable to concentrate. After seeing comments from you all, I am having some hopes 😊. Thank you so so much ❤. I will definitely update the outcome.

@Koalafaith great news. Congratulations!!!!

Koalafaith · 01/11/2022 02:13

This pregnancy ended up in a MMC :-(. Dr said after my previous scan at 7w6d, my baby stopped growing and at 9w1d scan there was no hearbeat. I underwent D&C on 27th Oct.
