Trying for a baby after long term pill use

Hi im nearly 28 and I've been on contraception mini pill since I was 16. Mid June we decided to start trying for a baby so i came off the pill. After a scare with my smear test we are finally at a point to start (august) However I've read online that you should wait until your first proper period. I bled for 1 morning and that's been it! Should we wait or is it okay to try? There's no where that explains it properly! :(

No harm in trying now, it’ll just be hard to track where you are in your cycle until you have a period where the cycle then starts a fresh at day 1. You’re only fertile a few days within your cycle so knowing when you ovulate can really help with TTC. But no medical reason why you can’t have unprotected sex (unless they told you not to after your smear?) and see what happens after a month or so. I would do it quite regularly across the month if you are actively trying to conceive. Once your period does arrive, you can start working out how long your cycle is and when you typically ovulate. Other things to look out for is discharge change, ‘egg white’ like discharge indicates fertile time.
Sorry if you know all this….

Yes, as pp says, it’s fine to try now but I personally wanted a few months for my cycles to get back to normal so I could track ovulation better. And so I’d have an idea if I was pregnant (e.g. missed period).

If you don’t know when your period is due you don’t know when it’s missed, and it’s harder to estimate your due date.

But these are all just “logistical” things, it won’t harm a potential baby if you try too early. Hope that makes sense.

Hi both thanks for your responses. I was very nervous as I read somewhere that your eggs can mature but go back to normal after 3 months. I don't know how true this is but you know Google.. .thankyou you've been very informative xx

Took me almost a year for my period to come back. When it did it was very irregular.

So irregular that I was 17 weeks pregnant before I found out!

You can try now. But it’s good to try after your first ‘proper’ period to help date your pregnancy initially and know when to send you for your first scan. But if you don’t it’s not the end of the world, they’ll figure out your due date eventually.

I stopped taking the pill about July /August and got pg in dec with number 1. Two and three were much quicker as I wasn't on the pill so it must affect things for a while. No harm in trying though.

When I was ttc my DD I came off the pill and waiting until period returned until trying. It came back in about 3 weeks. I'm currently ttc #2 and came off the pill 2 months ago. This time I started trying straight away. It's a bit trickier to track as pp have said but no harm trying and seeing what happens first month. I get ovulation pains so I knew when I was ovulating. You can also look out for egg white cervical mucus. My period again came back quickly within 4 weeks. I'm on cycle 2 now 13dpo and just waiting for AF to arrive as had a bfn test the other day. Good luck whatever you choose to do

I was the exact same and same age! I stopped it and got the ‘period’ you get when you first stop your pill and we technically tried that month but I think that was pointless since you’re supposed to wait the first cycle. I think mainly so it’s easier when giving dates for the pregnancy of when your last period started. Eventually after the longest 40 days of my life I got one. Tried the next month, didn’t conceive but also quite difficult to pin point when I ovulated since it was my first proper cycle. Got pregnant the next month 😊 good luck
