How far would/have you traveled for fertility treatment?

Hello all,

my partner and I decided to go to Manchester Fertility to start our TTC journey for a few different factors however I am curious to know how far would or have you traveled for treatment?

we are coming from London to Manchester which is taking us a little over 2 hours but 3 hours via train to be safe..

we done our first fertility check up appointment today and the train journey is soo long and tiring! I fell asleep a few times there and back and even felt a bit travel sick but I didn’t get any sleep last night before going so it made the whole situation a lot worse!

I'm curious to know if anyone else had traveled a bit of a distance each appointment just for treatment and wanted to know if it is doable?

they are factoring in that we are coming from London quite a bit and giving us late morning appointments and have actually tried to be really accommodating and I’m hoping that when treatment actually starts it will be something that can be given that 3 hour grace period just to get there but I don’t know if that’s expecting too much or if others have made a similar situation like this work?

thanks all, looking forward to reading your replies

Hi,
I travel 3.5hrs to my clinic door to door.

Daysy · 31/07/2022 22:50

I travelled 5 hrs door to door but it was a very intense regime (ARGC) and I moved to London for 6 weeks to see it through. I could have had it done 1.5 hrs away but success rates were a third of those at ARGC.

My friend travelled to a different country (I think Holland) for her ivf. She's had two boys so worth it!

Hello all, thank you so much for the replies!

@RMS0209 and @Daysy when you both say you travelled door to door for 3.5hrs and 5hrs was you coming back home each time and then doing the trip back when needed?

@easyday im guessing your friend stayed in Holland for the duration of her treatment? Instead of coming and going each time?

im having IUI treatment so I won’t be required to visit the clinic as often as you would for IVF but the one visit we did there last Friday and back was soo tiring! I mean the journey itself was smooth going it did involve about 4 trains but that was on 3 different lines but the one line out of London was the worst! We even checked if we could fly to Manchester to make it quicker but that was putting us further out the way which could have potential taken longer than we spent via train.

we have thought about temporarily moving up to Manchester but since we are not needed to go up that often it seemed like it’s not worth it (maybe the insemination and then checks to see if we were successful or now would be more worth it but 😫 I don’t think I have ever travelled that long via train so far but there is a first for everything and I feel somewhat better knowing others have done similar travels or longer and made it work 😌

Hi @Tropicaliyes
Yes so 3hrs down, my app time then 3hrs back up.
I have done this 3 times now. I will have to do this at-least another twice, but it will be worth it

Hi, depending on what clinic/company you are in you could use a satellite nearer to you for the monitoring scans and then just go to Manchester for the actual IUI? CARE and Create fertility in Manchester both have London clinics. If you are in Manchester fertility then I’m sure you could find just some private ultrasound clinics in London to do your scans, you would obviously have to pay for those scans but I’m sure it would be a lot cheaper than a train fare to from London and back!

I used Manchester Fertility, and I traveled round the M62 - I was exactly the other side of the city and it took 35-90 minutes depending on the time of day. They were recommended by friends who lived a good 70miles away. I have friends who went abroad and had to do several short notice journeys to Greece/Spain.

MF were excellent! My daughter is coming up to four.

We used Manchester fertility but live close by. I think it depends on your circumstances. I needed somewhere close by that I could get to easily before work as depending on the treatment you may have to go multiple times per week and couldn't take endless time off to accommodate it. You dont know dates in advance to be able to schedule leave etc. If I was self employed or could work remotely I would have gone to the clinic with the best results for my situation.
