At what point in early pregnancy should you go to the doctor if you're bleeding?

I hope this makes sense...

So I presume if you were in the very, very early days of a pregnancy and you thought you were having a MC (like a 'chemical pregnancy') you wouldn't bother going to the doctor, because what could they really do or tell you? You'd just keep testing maybe and see if the line fades or gets darker?

But at how many weeks gestation would it be worth going to the EPU for a scan if you started bleeding?

6 weeks perhaps? I suppose people could go earlier for a bloody test then go back 2 days later for another to see how the HCG levels are rising. I don't think anything is visible on a scan till about 6 weeks. Hope you're okay xxx

Blood test not bloody test xxx

I think you can go and see GP. I don’t know whether they will want to make sure it isn’t an ectopic pregnancy. If you get additional features eg abdominal/pelvic pain, large volume of blood loss, dizziness, collapse, fever then don’t hesitate to seek immediate medical advice (a&e or ambulance as ectopic pregnancy can be life threatening).

Namenic · 23/07/2022 17:21

If unsure, you can seek advice from 111, but I think it would be reasonable to contact gp (unless you have those additional features when you would go immediately to hospital).

I’m sorry you are going through this and hope you are ok.

I went at 6 weeks (either a couple of days before or a couple of days after) to epu and had external then internal scan.

I hope you're ok 😘

I went at 4ish weeks but GP wasn't helpful. I was told I probably hadn't been pregnant and it was just my period. I ended up contacting the EPU myself who were lovely and scanned me and took blood tests. They were concerned about an ectopic pregnancy as HCG levels rose but not enough to be viable, so I'm glad I did get seen. I hope you're ok, it's an awful helpless situation to be in.

HippeePrincess · 23/07/2022 19:53

I wouldn't bother before 6 weeks, possibly not before 8 either I'd just test til it was negative.

LuluF91 · 23/07/2022 21:37

I would phone at the very least to have it on record in case there is an issue in the future. If possible you may get referred to EPU if you're at least 6 weeks.

Coffeaddict · 23/07/2022 21:39

I had some bleeding and cramps when I thought I was 6 weeks. Had an early scan, was actually 5 weeks.

mrskatebob · 23/07/2022 21:51

I wouldn't before 12 weeks unless I had bad pains and suspected an ectopic, or was actively miscarrying very obviously.

There's nothing they can do that early to prevent a loss.

10speckledfrogs · 23/07/2022 22:21

I have had 4 miscarriages before 8 weeks in the last year.

Didn't seek help for any of them, just tested 7 days later to check and was negative

Had there been excessive bleeding or pain I would have seen the GP

Saw my GP at the last one because I'm done with it constantly happening and wanted to figure out if it is something fixable

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 23/07/2022 22:31

Rather than weeks, I always went to EPAU if I had unmanageable pain and excessive bleeding.

I never bothered with GP. Nothing they could do other than refer me to EPAU but I could do that myself.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 23/07/2022 22:33

Also never bothered to do pregnancy test as I still got a positive for up to 5 weeks after bleeding had stopped and miscarriage was completed.

Knew it was all done when my next period came.

Most EPU take self referrals, look on your local hospital website. Cut out the GP middle man and save time. Hope you're alright. If bleeding very heavy or you feel unwell with it go to A&E.
