Positive pregnancy test after period

Hi, mainly just needing to vent and seek reassurance. I had a GP appointment through my private work cover on Wednesday because my periods are usually 2-3 days maximum and very light, whereas this month the first few days were heavier with lots of cramping and a week on I'm still getting a little bit of blood. The GP advised me to do a pregnancy test to rule that out, and much to my surprise it was positive. I did another two just to be sure, including a digital one and they were all positive. When I followed up with the private GP she said I need to go to the early pregnancy unit because I've had bleeding and a positive test. When I called the early pregnancy unit they said they would only see me if my NHS GP called them, so I had a face to face with an NHS GP yesterday afternoon. She was very dismissive when I told her my last period (before this bleed which I thought was my period) was 28th May and said I wouldn't be pregnant yet if that was the case and the positive test was probably because of some kind of hormonal inbalance. I've read a lot about chemical pregnancies and am wondering if that's what this is, but I'm also questioning everything now the GP basically implied I'm making the whole thing up. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience of bleeding and a positive test? I'm kind of ok whatever the outcome, it's the not knowing what's going on that i'm struggling with.

That sounds like my chemical pregnancy back in November - period started as usual, perhaps a day or so early, then a week later I had another light bleed. I messaged the GP and she advised I took a pregnancy test. The line was super faint but just visible. Two days later it was negative and I went on to have a normal cycle, taking the second bleed as my period starting.

If your test lines aren't getting stronger, I'm afraid I think you may be having a chemical pregnancy. If they are getting stronger, contact the GP and demand they refer you to the EPU.

Either way, you really shouldn't have been treated like that by the GP! That's not right.

Thank you, this is really helpful! I will do another test today and go from there. Really sorry to hear that you had a chemical pregnancy, thanks so much for sharing your experience. It’s reassuring to hear that you went on to have a normal cycle afterwards.

I also had this last cycle, I had what I assumed was a normal period but things felt a bit off a few days later so i tested and was positive. I had really bad cramping that night and a visit to epu a few days later confirmed it must have been a chemical. I'm sorry if this is what's happening, it's not nice is it.

This has also just happened to me! I had a negative test then the next day AF showed up and was normal length/flow etc. I then got some cramping and days of positive Opks so did a test and was positive (obviously positive)That night I started spotting and then over the next few days got one sided cramping. I went to the GP at day 7 of spotting. As I was so early she booked me for an urgent HCG blood test. Unfortunately the next day I had heavy bleeding with clots (Wednesday) the blood test was the next day and still had heavy bleeding then Friday was spotting. My HCG was borderline, the spotting stopped by Saturday and my test was negative by the Sunday.

Really hope it’s a better outcome for you OP, it’s horrible not knowing what’s happening x

I tested negative, then had what I thought was a regular period (quite heavy as usual, but a couple of days shorter), then I got a positive test and am now 34 weeks, so it's not always clear cut

Thanks for the support ladies. I’ve tested negative now and bleeding has got a bit heavier again so definitely a chemical. Upsetting but at least I know now. Just wondering if I should push to get seen by someone for the bleeding? It’s been light but continuous for 9 days now which is very unusual for me. I’m reluctant to go back to the GP as she was adamant I was just having my period, but also don’t want to go unseen if it could be causing longer term problems.

@pippy92 if it's only light then I'd say you're safe to just wait it out. I'd only say it would be concerning if it was heavy for that long. I'm really sorry about the chemical, they really do suck. Hope you're feeling okay and fingers crossed for you going forward 😘
