Hi!

Name change as asking for a friend (genuinely lol) and she doesn’t want to be linked to my usual name on here.

Sorry if the thread is insensitive but I’m on my 6th month ttc myself so I feel the struggles of those ttc.

My friend however just found out that she is pregnant around 7-8 weeks and she is considering a termination due to not being with the father, not being financial stable enough etc. It’s just not the right time for her.

She was asking me if I knew if there’s anyway to have your fertility checked while pregnant. Obviously she can conceive but as in egg reserves/how many reproductive years she may have left things like that.

She is mid 30’s and does want children in the future when the time is right but wants that peace of mind that she has time before proceeding with a termination as obviously if she doesn’t then that changes things.

Can anyone shed some light? Lots of googling has come up blank.

Thanks ladies 😊

I am not well versed on this topic but having gone through IVF myself,
I imagine your friend can go ahead with the egg extraction part and then get the eggs tested for quality. Could be expensive though.

Not sure if there are more straightforward and less invasive ways to tell egg quality.

Can have private fertility testing. I had ivf and one of the tests was egg reserve, can't tell you exactly how many eggs you have left but I know mine came back low. When you are born you are born with all the eggs you'll ever have, you never get anymore.

She won’t be able to, since anti-mullerian hormone levels change during pregnancy.

You can’t do an egg extraction while pregnant either. Ovulation is suppressed.

AMH levels are a blood test, but pregnancy might effect them!

TheDaydreamBelievers · 23/04/2022 08:28

Pregnancy effects AMH levels expressed in blood so it wouldn't be accurate at all

Seems like an impossible idea.

She needs to concentrate on the pregnancy she has, decide what to do about that and be OK with her decision regardless of future fertility.

NoSquirrels · 23/04/2022 08:41

She is mid 30’s and does want children in the future when the time is right but wants that peace of mind that she has time

And if she was my friend I would tell her that there is no way to get certainty over fertility, even with all the tests in the world, that mid-30s is already heading to the ‘declining fertility’ part of her reproductive life, and that no time is ever exactly right for having a baby.

Obvious caveats are if the father is abusive or she’d be homeless etc.

If youre not pregnant you can do amh testing to see your egg reserves and fsh but even that won't tell you how long you have left. They're rough numbers but they're pretty useless in judging how long you have left as everyone's numbers reduce at a different rates.

Extracting an egg will also be useless as unless you extract lots (and fertilise) and test them all then you can't see their quality. This will also likely cost around 10k with all the testing and can't be done whilst pregnant

Thank you all for the advice and info it’s very helpful. I have passed it on and will try to support her with her decision with this pregnancy and have her concentrate on that rather than the future which is difficult to predict 😊
