MMC/blighted ovum whilst on progesterone TTC baby #2

Hi all,

I fell pregnant first cycle for baby #2 last month. I am on progesterone for a couple of short luteal phases, I also had a hysteroscopy in November due to scarring in my cervix from a D&C I had after my dd due to retained placenta (all completely cleared out and looking good) this is where they noticed my lining was thinner at some parts of my cycle where it should have been thicker.

I went for a scan on Thursday all excited only to find it was a blighted ovum, there was nothing inside at all apart from the sack. I was gutted, so was my dh. It was just so gut wrenching and I feel for anyone who's been through this. I was 6 weeks + 1 at the scan.

I have come off the progesterone and going for a follow up on Wednesday.

I haven't started bleeding yet and I want to desperately now as my consultant said as soon as I stop bleeding I can try again. I am trying to focus on that we can try again.

He said to me the most probable reason for this was chromosome (which he said is the better outcome) as I had progesterone so it wouldn't have been my lining, and my uterus looks good and healthy so it most likely wasn't that either.

I am petrified I won't start bleeding and will need medical management that will lead to more scarring for one. I am also scared that it will take us ages to get pregnant again.

I lost my dad a year ago and I am honestly a wreck and really hate that I am having to go through a form of grief again.

How long did it take you a) to bleed if you had this and b) to conceive again?

Lost, scared and looking for some hope ❤️

Aw @KateJ59 its an awful thing to happen and you cant quite believe it is happening to you. I was diagnosed at 9 weeks with a blighted ovum and a MMC... it is a shock, I didn't have a mc until 11 weeks, I think once you head accepts what happening, your body then realises it has to let go. I opted not to have any medical intervention as I wanted my body to do it naturally. Luckily I had some codine in the house from a tooth extraction the year before that I took for the pain (which lasted for 4-5hours with the passing of tissue etc). I haven't really been in a position to conceive much again since, so I cant say how fertile or not I am now nearly a year later.

You will be ok, this bit is a bit shit thou xxx

Literally just miscarried due to blighted ovum.

Had suspicions at a scan at exactly 6 weeks. Had a second scan on Friday which confirmed it. Was spotting everyday between 6 & 8 weeks.

Started bleeding on Saturday and passed the sac yesterday.

Probably coincidence but it was like as soon as I knew there was no baby, my body got on with it.

I didn't need any painkillers (but then I have relatively sore periods and it felt much the same) but there was a time period of 5 hours where I couldn't be far from the loo.

Oh and to b) this baby was conceived 2nd time.

We're taking a break for a few months so I can celebrate birthdays and holidays properly (i.e. with some wine!) and starting again in June time.
