2% Morphology success stories

My partner went for his semen sample test last week and we are able to see the results on patient access and it says normal no action. I’ve had a look at what’s been reported on it and it’s saying 2% morphology? I’ve had a Google and this doesn’t appear to be a good thing so I’m confused as to why they’ve said it’s normal. If we hadn’t been able to see the results and they’d just said it was fine we’d be none the wiser! The rest of his count appears to be normal progressive motility is 51% and count is 150 million. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced there partners having low morphology and any success stories? I’m also having blood tests on Monday to check my thyroid level again as TSH was 5.8 back in feb! Beginning to give up hope it’ll ever happen :(

Hi @ddizzle88 - my understanding from a lot of reading is that morphology is the least 'important' factor and the one that is hardest to be sure is correct. 2% is low, but with a high count, it isn't something to REALLY worry about. Remember they only sample a really small amount of sperm. Having said this, I would personally consider ensuring your OH doesn't take long hot baths / saunas, doesn't cycle, doesn't drink alcohol or caffeine is large quantities and consider the supplements he takes.

My OH had a 0% and his latest is at 9%. He has been religiously taking Proxeed, Vital DHA, ubiquol and pycnogenol. How long have you been TTC? X

Hey,

Thank you for your reply. He doesn’t really drink alcohol tbf, and has one coffee a day. He doesn’t take any vitamins though he’s terrible for remembering to.
Have you got pregnant yourself or still trying? We’ve been trying for a year now.

We had low sperm motility and morphology .. but the actual count was fine. In the end we had ICSI and this resulted in a positive result (currently 36 weeks pregnant) I would recommend listening to a couple of BFN podcast episodes on the sperm issue it really helped me understand the issue. I've screen shotted the two I think cover it. Sperm quality can def be improved with diet and supplements, unlike egg reserves.

DH had low morphology but a high count. I put him on all sorts of supplements after the first count (selenium in particular) and his morphology went up considerably at the second test. It may have gone up without all my interventions too of course. We conceived naturally (with a boost from Clomid).

Rosser · 25/03/2022 19:54

DH had low everything and we were told we would require ICSI. There was no possibly about it. Ours was secondary infertility so we decided against it and made peace with having one child and if it happened then it happened, if it didn’t, it didn’t.

He started eating really healthily, took all the supplements he could, stopped cycling, stopped wearing tight boxers, stopped carrying his mobile in his pocket. Anything else Dr Google suggested. We did conceive naturally but it took 2 years.

Good luck!

ddizzle88 · 25/03/2022 20:09

Why selenium? I am contemplating saying for him to take multivitamins or maybe vitamins that help with conceiving. He’s going to speak with doctors about it on Monday, as if there saying it’s normal no action they must not be worried about it.

My husband had low morphology and mobility, he gave up alcohol and caffeine, took loads of supplements and went on a health kick. I was pregnant 2.5 months later after 3 years of trying.

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/03/2022 21:07

Motility I mean.

Charl881 · 26/03/2022 19:29

My DH had morphology of 1% when he had a sperm analysis when TTC DS. We conceived him shortly afterwards (about 13 months of trying in total).

No idea what his morphology is now as this was 2.5 years ago but we’ve just conceived again.

The way it was explained to us, if he has a good speed count then that’s still a decent about of non mishapen sperm that have a good shot of penetrating the egg. I think normal morphology is only around 4% anyway so don’t be put off thinking 2% is horrendously low.

The only thing we did and I’m not sure if it made a difference if not but was my partner taking the pregnacare for him vitamins.

Good luck.

@ddizzle88 a year trying and no pregnancy yet. We have low count though too, so it's probably going to be tricky - we will love to IVF post summer probably x

This thread is how we increased DH’s morphology from 2% to 6% over a few months Smile

Not the point of your thread I know, but I'd push to get treatment for your thyroid. Your TSH level is above the threshold at which IVF clinics would want you on treatment.

Yeah I know, I was to be referred for fertility treatment but cause it’s high it’s been on hold. I’ve got blood tests on Monday as the doctor wanted them to be repeated to see if is still high as it’s never been high before so will see what comes from the blood tests on Monday.
