My ovulation test says that I'm ovulating today. Firstly, how accurate are ovulation tests abs secondly, my partner and I dtd yesterday is there a good chance of pregnancy? Thanks

They detect the LH hormone which peaks at ovulation, so very accurate.

Sperm can survive up to around 6 days, so yes there is a chance.

claire3186 · 27/02/2022 21:54

Thank you. We've been trying for a while and never got a real positive ovulation test so hoping timing of dtd is good and might just happen.

If you are normally fertile and fit and healthy, trying with a healthy and fertile partner and have sex at the right time, chances of conception are around 20-25% max. So not overwhelmingly likely but a pretty good chance.

sabusays · 27/02/2022 22:03

25% is so much lower than I thought it would be. Suppose the good things in life are not easy…

Why not a good chance? Is that just because it's so hard to actually get pregnant?

I thought it was 32% which isn't much better.

Are you only going to have sec once? I mean that’s all it takes, but if you know you’re ovulating, why not more?

pliss · 27/02/2022 22:14

The OPK peak happens 24-36 hours before ovulation, not at ovulation.

The egg lives 12-24 hours.

Sperm can live for up to five days, but on average it will live for 36-48 hours.

pliss · 27/02/2022 22:15

Posted too soon - therefore around ovulation and leading up to it, you need to be DTD every 1-2 days for the best chance.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 27/02/2022 22:18

20-25% with good sex timing each month (assuming both are healthy) means you're very likely to get pregnant within 6months.

Partner had to work today and this eve unfortunately.

Sorry for being somewhat useless about things but I thought you could only get pregnant 5 days before ovulation?

You can get pregnant if you have sex from 5 days before ovulation to the day of ovulation. The official best chances are the day before and 2 days before. The OPK peak shows you will ovulate soon (assuming you have a normal cycle with only on peak). So the OPK is a rough predictor of ovulation in the next 12-48 hrs

Thank you. So are you saying that ovulation isn't today (even though positive test) but in a few days? Sorry for all the questions I think I'm overthinking things a little.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 27/02/2022 23:26

Yeap @claire3186 - ovulation tests measure a hormone called LH. The peak in LH is part of the trigger for ovulation, so ovulation then happens just after a peak

TheDaydreamBelievers · 27/02/2022 23:28

If this is early in you trying, you are definitely overthinking it. Most people will get pregnant just having unprotected sex within the 6 months mark.

claireday03 · 27/02/2022 23:42

Thank you. It's relatively early in trying but I overthink most things. As dp works shifts not sure if dtd is possible in the next couple of days so was just hoping dtd yesterday might be enough?! X

ShowOfHands · 28/02/2022 07:10

I think you misread me as I said there IS a pretty good chance of getting pregnant. As I said, the chances are between 20 and 25% if you are both fertile and have sex at the right time. Those are pretty good odds meaning that most people will naturally get pregnant within 6 to 12 months.

The LH surge shown by opks indicate that ov is possibly about to happen. It's not a precise way of pinpointing ov as LH surges don't always mean ovulation but if you're fertile, sex every couple of days or every 3 days at least should be enough. You are fertile for a short time after ovulation but probably no longer than 12hrs or 24hrs at the very most.

claireday03 · 28/02/2022 09:51

Hi ShowOfHands thank you so much for your messages I really appreciate it. Just to clarify (as I'm seemingly a bit slow on all of this Wink) positive ovulation test yesterday, dtd Saturday - there is a chance of pregnancy as it's 3 days before the release of an egg. Partner is working night shifts today and tomorrow so won't be able to dtd then! Thanks once again for your help!
