Always possible but I would have thought extremely unlikely

2008ISCOMING · 28/12/2007 16:40

Do you think so ??? I heard that sperms could stay alive for 5 days ?

Do you know when you usually ovulate? If you ovulate 14 days before your period starts then you will not have conceived but day 12 or earlier and it's possible.

Are you late?

pinkteddy · 28/12/2007 16:42

yes they can - I think up to 7 days - so if you ovulate on day 12 or 13 could be possible.

lulumama · 28/12/2007 16:42

of course you could be, it is unlikely, but it is possible...

try not to worry, the worry itself can delay your period, if this was in the lat couple of days you could get MAP or have a coil fitted

i take it you don;t want to be pregnant?

oxocube · 28/12/2007 16:42

Yes but given a 28 day cycle, you would ovulate around day 14. You had sex on day 7 so that would be roughly a week for the sperm to still be alive before any chance of conception. At least that's the way I would think of it.

FlllightAttendant · 28/12/2007 16:44

It is definitely possible. They can live for up to a week. However it is not highly likely so try not to panic!
I had a short cycle before my pregnancies, so I was ovulating on day 10 or 11 - then next period would start on day 24 or 25 usually.
When is your period due next?

2008ISCOMING · 28/12/2007 16:44

I'm not late...yet...I'm due around the 8th of january but I cant stop worrying as I feel I have nausea..and it started very early as well for my dds...and also I'm ashamed to say..we had another accident (splitted condom) before yesterday and I took the MAP butI feel like it didnt work...and I was on day 12 after the 1rst day of my periods..forgive my ignorance

OP posts:
oxocube · 28/12/2007 16:47

Well day 12 is very possible. Much more likely than day 7 I would say

2008ISCOMING · 28/12/2007 16:49

So I just have to hope that the MAP worked then..I really hope so !

2008ISCOMING · 28/12/2007 16:54

Mmmmmmh...and when did you start feeling pregnant ?? I'm so worried that I make myself sick unless it's true nauseas !!

Thats when I got pregnant. Do you have short cycles? Mine 26 days and I ovulate at end of my period (hence why it took us ages to conceive as hadnt worked that one out)

lulumama · 28/12/2007 16:55

go and see about having a coil?

LadyTophamHatt · 28/12/2007 16:56

I knew I was PG before any test could tell me...probably strated to wonder if I was about 10-12 days before my period was due but stuck my head inthe sand!!

2008ISCOMING · 28/12/2007 16:59

Well my cycle is sometimes 25 days, sometimes 28 days as it was last time...Lulu, I have ordered my coil today actually and I hope I'll get it fitted asap if I'm not pregant...If I was it will be the end of the world as I wont be able to keep the baby

here we go again

women do NOT OVULATE 14 DAYS AFTER THE START OF A PERIOD

nor do we ovulate 14 days BEFORE THE start of the next period

women ovulate on different cycle days and the 28 day cycle / 14 day ovulation is a statistical average

I for one example used to ovulate on day 23 of a 30 day cycle .. ovulating on day 8 or 9 is not unusual

so yes you could be pregnant .. if you have sex you can become pregnant

2008ISCOMING · 28/12/2007 17:03

Thanks for the clarification Magrat !

lulumama · 28/12/2007 17:04

the coil can also prevent implantation

hope things work out for you x

Magrat · 28/12/2007 17:15

sorry wasn't having a go at you but just the oft quoted 14 day bollocks really pisses me orf .. I've heard of GPs saying it too

I hope it works out for you

2008ISCOMING · 28/12/2007 17:23

Thanks lulu and magra and everybody !

As I understand it, sperm only survive the maximum quoted time (5-7) days if the 'enviroment' is ideal (ie your cervical fluid is of fertile quality), so if you weren't approaching ovulation they probably wouldn't last nearly that long - but obviously that's not very helpful if you don't know where you were re: ovulation anyway. I didn't quite gather when you took the MAP but the interesting thing about the morning after pill is that, scientifically speaking, no-one's quite sure how it works! the only thing that's pretty certain is that it prevents ovulation, there's no definite evidence that it does anything else (ie preventing the implantation of an already fertilised ovum). So its failure rate may occur in cases where a woman has already ovulated when she takes it.

Re - the ignorance even of GPs, my housemate is a hospital doctor (a paediatrician, not a gynaecologist but quite senior) and she has recently started charting with the TCOYF book and has learnt a great deal!! bit alarming really . . .

FlllightAttendant · 29/12/2007 06:30

Oh pet, would you really not be Ok to keep the baby?

You re already a wonderful mum to your girls, trust me I know

All you would need is a little support.

Wishing for a great new year for you, whatever the outcome xxxx
