Full week of spotting when period is due

Hello ladies!

So I'd like some help. I've been spotting for a week and have only just finished (I think) and I'm honestly not sure whether it was my period or something else.

I had my last proper period on the 27th November and it lasted 4 days with 2 days of spotting afterwards as it trailed off. My partner and I were then ill from about the 5th until the 15th so didn't have sex at all. This also covered the days when I expected to ovulate so I wasn't expecting to have any chance at pregnancy this month.

We had unprotected sex on the 17th (CD21) and when I went to the loo afterwards there was a bit of blood. I assumed it was friction from not having sex in a while.

My period was meant to start around the 25th (typical) and I was getting all my usual signs of it coming; cramps, spots, angry mood, I wasn't particularly bloated though.

On the 26th (CD30) I started spotting. I wore a pantyliner both that day and on the 27th (which was when my cramps were really bad) and both days didn't really have much on it. The 27th had slightly more but it was really staying confined to when I wiped and wasn't really making it to my underwear.

I put in a tampon on the 28th because I had wiped and got a fair amount of blood but when I took it out there was a layer of pink CM covering it but nothing had actually penetrated it. The tampon I wore that night had a small amount of blood soaked onto the tip and that's it (bearing in mind I'm usually quite heavy to begin with).

I stopped using tampons as I didn't want to waste them and since then until today (nothing today so far - CD37), every time I've wiped I've had varying levels of pink/orange blood. Sometimes there's more, sometimes there's barely any, occasionally there are small clots, but there's never enough to justify a tampon or pad and it rarely made it to my underwear.

I'm just wondering what everyone's opinions about this was. I haven't had time to take a test as between Christmas, new year, and an assignment being due in between the two, I haven't really had a lot of time to think about this until right now. Does it sound like a very light period or implantation bleeding or something else? I've had one experience of random spotting for a week a couple of months ago but that was 2 weeks after my period occured and my cycle that month ended up being 53 days (I'm still not sure what happened there as I don't temp or use OPK's - we're NTNP atm) so I feel like this isn't caused by the same thing that caused whatever that cycle was.

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated! :)

Bump and also update: I checked my cervix just now and it's at a medium height but also very squishy soft. Not what I was expecting at the tail end of a potential period at ALL. Will be popping to the shop later for a pregnancy test!!

I can't offer any sort of advice as this hasn't happened to me, but were you on any kind of contraception previously? As this makes your cycle so strange things lol and have you taken a pregnancy test yet? Definitely seems odd

@Dreamer30 Thanks for your response! I was on the combined pill until I came off it on the 30th June. I figured it would have been long enough now that surely this isn't caused by my body still trying to figure out it's hormones?

I haven't taken a pregnancy test yet but I'm literally about to go out and buy one now. Only going to get a cheap one as it's past when my period was due so should show positive with any test I take. I'll update with the result!

Bump! After googling I've discovered that the COVID vaccine can have an effect on your cycle. So in the interest of complete information, I had my booster on the 16th December, which was the day before I got that spotting that I chalked up to friction from sex. Unsure if this has in fact had an effect on my cycle and maybe I've only just ovulated and shouldn't be expecting my period just yet🤔
