5 miscarriages, pregnant again. Prescribed predisnolone steroid 5mg anyone?

As the title states I’ve had 5 miscarriages this year currently pregnant for the 6th time.
Last time I was on progesterone pessaries alone and got my furthest (9 weeks) but no growth or heartbeat on scan.
This time I’ve been told to double the dose of progesterone, take 5mg of predisnolone (steroid) and have taken it upon myself to take 75mg aspirin daily too.
Any success stories please? Is the steroid doseage high enough do you think as everything I’ve read states 20mg is normal for recurrent miscarriage?
I have t got to the stage of testing yet my first appointment at the rmc was due in December. Thank you x

I should state ‘testing’ meant I haven’t had any tests done yet other than private ones which showed I have low egg reserve for my age (31) so I don’t know the cause of my miscarriages

*prednisolone

I know nothing about the progesterone but have you checked with midwife about the aspirin? I was told not to take it till 12 weeks but unsure why xx

Roselilly36 · 17/11/2021 18:28

That is a very low dose, I have taken a short course of the same steroid in the past, the dose prescribed was 500mg per day for 5 days. High dose, pharmacist queried it immediately, I was very poorly with Transverse Myelitis at the time. Good luck OP, sorry for your losses, keeping everything crossed for you.

Knifeandfawkes · 17/11/2021 18:32

5mg is too low, you're right, it should be 20mg for recurrent miscarriage.

I take it when pregnant due to recurrent IVF failure and multiple miscarriages.

user1484920171 · 17/11/2021 18:51

I was prescribed 25mg with my pregnancy that resulted in my dc.

Freetodowhatiwant · 17/11/2021 18:54

I saw a miscarriage expert and was on 25mg of Prednisolone. 5mg seems cautiously low. There should still be a thread running in the conception boards with many people being treated with similar. It’s called something about immune conditions or nk cells aka the Pred Thread.

OP, please check with a health care professional about the aspirin and tell them you have started it as there is a drug interaction between aspirin and prednisone. They might feel the benefits outweigh the risks (it happens often with drugs that interact or have side effects) so they won't be concerned about you taking it, but best to be sure.

Thank you for your replies. I spoke to a gp this evening who really did not have a clue about any of these things, that phone call took 3 days to get so I really don’t know where to turn next? I’ve only just found out I’m pregnant so not even on the midwives list yet and they are also impossible to get hold of. I just feel so alone, like no one is really trying to help me. I want to do all I can to not lose this one but I feel like it’s inevitable with no one fighting for me.
Even the private consultant who prescribed the prednisone seemed dismissive and gave me a very low doseage. Do I take 4x the amount I was told to or try to contact her again?
Sorry. I feel like you are the only people actually listening to me at the moment

So sorry. Can't really give any advice but stay strong. There's clearly some issues so stay persistent until you get what you want. Big hug x

Pred (20mg which was gradually reduced) and aspirin and lmw heparin were the only things that worked to make a baby stick for me. But I had confirmed autoimmune issues for my problems so it was an effective treatment. I think if they’re not sure what your problem is then they might be wary of using it as it can cause genital development problems - DS, for example, as a slight issue his pediatrician thinks might have been caused by pred.

5mg is much too low. I was on 10mg with one clinic and saw an immunes specialist who immediately boosted to 25mg until I was just over 12 weeks. I also had 75mg aspirin from ovulation. Alongside that I had lots of progesterone support, clexane and other immune meds on top.
If your consultant won’t help find another one . When I was on 10mg I hunted for another clinic that was more specialised in immunes who put me on lots of meds and after 4 mcs this is the only one to get past first trimester ( few weeks from birth now)
Try dr Gorgy as he will work with you after bfp whereas when I went to dr Shehata he prefers to start meds before that. Sure there are others out there too if you google.
Forget the GP ! He was trying to stop me taking steroids and had no idea about immunes etc

Smiler79 · 18/11/2021 09:01

Sorry agree with pp, you need to be tested for immunes. I had confirmed issues hence the meds

user1471604848 · 18/11/2021 09:25

I was tested for immune issues, and was on 25mg of Prednisolone until 12-weeks pregnant.

I was also taking 40mg Clexane (blood thinning) injections and Aspirin (can't remember the dose).

Thank you everyone for your replies
I’ve had a very stressful week trying to chase the hospital (nhs) trying to get advice from the dr I was due to see in December. If it’s taking this long to just get hold of someone I expect getting in for testing is out of the question. We can’t afford private prices at the moment on top of how much I’m paying for the progesterone pessaries/Christmas coming up
Really hoping the pessaries, aspirin and pred will do the trick 😔 I guess all I can do is wait and hope as no one is willing to help me at the moment. Except you lovely people so thank you

Hi @WillowRose1411 I don't have any advice on the prednisone but like you I have had 4 miscarriages and currently on pregnancy 5! Are you based in the U.K.? I was referred to Tommy's and my tests showed that I have a condition called Lupus Anticoagulant which is to do with blood clotting. I was placed on Aspirin 2 x 75mg a day and also clexane injections from a positive pregnancy test. I am now 24 weeks. I was also given pessaries as a precaution and have a load left over unopened. I tried giving them back but the hospital wouldn't take them. I'm not sure if this is allowed but I'd be happy to send them to you to save you buying them.

WillowRose1411 · 20/11/2021 08:56

@Coxy88 thank you that would be an incredible help. If you check your personal inbox I will message you. The website doesn’t notify you if you have a pm so you have to go in and check.
