Am I having a miscarriage? Hospital won’t give me answers

7th august I did a test after being 5 days late of period - positive.
3 days later I had severe cramps so I rang hospital and they told me to come in. Went down and they had me do a urine sample first - positive. Then they did a scan and she said she can see a sack but can’t see a baby. Told me not to worry as I could be very early pregnant so it could be so small to see. She asked to do an internal scan and still couldn’t see nothing. Then told me I need a blood test which I did to check my HCG levels.
They rang me back later that day and said my HCG levels were 600 and to go back 48 hours later for another blood test as HCG levels double in 2 days. I went back on the Thursday and had a blood test and they called me back that afternoon and said they have risen but not by much.
And said the best thing to do is to repeat the same thing, do a blood test and a scan a week later and go from there. But they handed me over to early pregnancy unit and said they are specialists. So Tuesday just gone I had an internal scan and the woman said the same thing, she also cannot find a baby. They gave me a slip of paper to take down to the blood test department because she tried to do one but couldn’t find a decent vein, and on the slip said “unknown location of pregnancy”.
I had a blood test and they explained about it could be an ectopic pregnancy. They told me to go home and if I get any bleeding or any bad pain again then to call up immediately. That day I had a phone call and my HCG levels should of gone up loads by now since it’s been a week since my last blood test and she said it had just risen up into the 700’s. Nothing much. They explained about an ectopic pregnancy and I’d need to come back this Tuesday for a 3rd scan.
I was meant to go for a blood test again (my 6th one Hmm) yesterday but could not get off work so had to cancel. They said they advise me to go but if I couldn’t then just come this Tuesday for a scan and a blood test.
So I’m going this Tuesday to do that but yesterday I was at work and felt like period cramps. I was too scared to go to the toilet because if I was bleeding I know I’d stress all day at work so I waited until I got home, went to the toilet and had dried blood in my underwear. Also each time I wiped there was light pink bleeding. I rang the hospital and they asked me a ton of questions and said she’s happy for me to stay at home until Tuesday but if I’m soaking through a pad every half hour and cramps get worse and I’m unable to do normal stuff then to call back. I asked am I having a miscarriage and she said she can’t give me any answers until they know exactly what’s going on.

Today the bleeding is bright red with worse cramping but I can still move around and do my normal things. I got period like cramps that are worse than normal period cramps, but I can still walk about and do my usual things. The bleeding is heavier and constant now and I’m stressing what’s going on. Nobody has gave me any answers and it’s coming onto over 2 weeks. I can’t use tampons either and it’s just awful.
Has anyone ever been through this? What’s going on Sad

I am so sorry to hear how things are for you, I would go back to the EPU and ask to be seen, even if they just tell you the same as above, for me I at least felt that I was doing something about it, as I made myself ill with the level of stress I had in the same situation.

I don't know enough about ectopic pg to advise on that, if they saw a sac though it does seem to have been in the right place.
The HCG levels are not good. I haven't had a pg with low levels that managed to be successful. Though you read all sorts of scenarios on the internet so who knows? The bleeding, cramping and the low levels do all sound like you may be miscarrying. I am so sorry you are going through this and hope you get the answers you need soon. Do you have someone with you in RL to support you?

Yes that’s what I seem to think that I am miscarrying.
I haven’t told nobody I am pregnant and won’t tell anyone if I am infact miscarrying, I don’t want anyone fussing. But I do have a loving supportive partner who knows what’s going on and is here for me Smile
Thank you for your answers I appreciate it. Hopefully I get more answers on Tuesday!

You will get through this whatever happens, though it feels so sad and confusing just now. There's a lot of support on here if you need it FlowersFlowers

I’m so sorry this is happening.

I have had an ectopic and the reason they can’t tell you is because they don’t have conclusive information yet. If they could see a sac but no baby in the uterus and you are now bleeding then a miscarriage is one possibility. Slowly rising HcG can be a sign of an ectopic and it’s possible to have two fertilised eggs, one which ends up in the Fallopian tube, or it’s possible that what looked like a sac on the earlier scan wasn’t. However it could also be that your HcG has gone up a little but is going to start coming down, which would be more indicative of a miscarriage.

And then there are cases where women have unexplained bleeding and HcG levels don’t match with expectations but then the pregnancy does develop, given a little more time.

If it is an ectopic there are three lines of treatment - waiting to see if you pass the pregnancy naturally, much like a miscarriage; treating you with an injection; or surgery to either clear the tube or remove the Fallopian tube altogether. The best course of action will very much depend on your situation.

My advice would be to look after yourself as best you can, get as much support as you can and stay close to home/the hospital. I wouldn’t go back to work before Tuesday. If you experience severe pain, particularly if it’s on one side, or severe bleeding you need to go to A&E right away. Don’t wait. It’s likely not ectopic but if it is and it ruptures (resulting in lots of pain and/or bleeding) it could be life threatening.

On Tuesday they should do an internal scan to get a good look at your tubes as well as the uterus and they should hopefully be able to give you a sense of what’s happening.

The Miscarriage association and the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust as well as Tommy’s all have good information online. They also have forums/Facebook groups where you can ask questions.

If in doubt, go to A&E. Flowers x

Sorry to hear this, I had an early miscarriage last year, I was about 10 weeks. Started off with bleeding and cramps as if I’d come on my period.
I had to go back every week for 3 weeks for internal scans before they told me 100% there’s no viable pregnancy but from what they said about the sac at the first appointment and all the bleeding I just knew I was miscarrying.
Those 3 weeks were horrendous not having any clarity but they obviously need to be 100% sure before making any final decisions
I remember not really knowing what was going on at all and I had no clue what they were talking about as it was my first pregnancy.
I think sometimes they assume you know what they mean and it’s such a common occurrence (unfortunately) that I feel like they can be a little insensitive at times.
I hope they give your further clarity on the whole situation x
