Confused - period late but BFN

We have been TTC for a while now. I usually have a very regular 27 day cycle, with a positive OPK around day CD14, but this month everything seems to be going wrong.

I tested with OPKs until CD18, then stopped assuming that I am out for the cycle, so unfortunately I don't know whether I ovulated late or not at all.

Now I'm at CD30 and AF hasn't showed up (3 days late already). I've been feeling period-like cramps on and off for the past 5 days, but I don't have any other period/pregnancy symptoms. This morning I decided to take a pregnancy test, and it's a BFN - not even a hint of a line.

I know the only thing I can really do is to wait it out, but would really like to understand what is happening in my body.

Has anyone had a similar experience and what was the outcome? Is it even possible to be pregnant if you have a BFN when you are 3 days late? - most people seem to test positive before AF is even due. Can you get pregnant from ovulation so late in you cycle? So many questions Confused - any experiences would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

sounds like you ovulated much later than usual. It happens sometimes and isn't anything to worry about. Follicular phases vary. Luteal phases are fairly static. Some follicles are just more sensitive than others. My normal ovulation is around day 15/16 but I've had freak cycles where I ovulated a week late or even earlier. Totally random but it happens.

It's not possible to get a false negative three days after your period is due, but you don't know when your period is due as you don't know when you ovulated. You can get pregnant from ovulation at any time in your cycle.

@kennetrose thanks for explaining! What you are saying makes a lot of sense. I guess it's best to keep testing with OPKs until you ovulate, then you'll have a much better sense of when to actually expect your period to arrive.

Similar situation, period is 12 days late but tested negative so I’m on cycle day 43. No idea what is going on either! I did get positive opk tests around my usual ovulation window (around day 19) but didn’t temp this month so can’t confirm ovulation 100% happened. Now I’m just waiting for my period to arrive but have no idea of when it will or when I can start trying again! I don’t know if it counts as a very long cycle or whether I’ve missed a period and will be having another ovulation before my next period. I’m very confused too!

Wanderdream · 09/08/2021 12:29

@BabyFeet92 out of interest have you had the covid vaccine recently? That’s the only lifestyle change I could poss put mine down to however I’d had a period since my vaccine so this seems unlikely 🤔

Miliao · 09/08/2021 12:33

This happens quite a lot when ttc. I’ve not known any explanation for it, may be psychological. I had 27 days on the dot periods, but when ttc I had a 40,50, and 60 cycle! It’s very annoying!

BabyFeet92 · 09/08/2021 12:41

@Wanderdream - it's incredibly frustrating isn't it? I made peace with the fact that this is probably not our cycle when my ovulation did not show up when expected, but now I'm all over the show again. If I'm not pregnant (which is probably the case) I just want to move on the the next cycle.

Have you been testing this entire time? Do you have any symptoms suggesting you might be pregnant?

I haven't had a covid vaccine yet (I'm based in South Africa, and under 35 year old's can only register from 1 September 2021 onwards), so that can't be playing a role in my case. But I did start a new job beginning of July, so it might be stress related.

@Miliao wow up to 60 day cycles! That's crazy! It is very annoying and suddenly you are hyperaware of everything going on. That certainly doesn't help!

@BabyFeet92 oh so frustrating! Still nothing here 👀

Zero pregnancy symptoms so wasn’t expecting a positive (I had very distinct symptoms from 10 dpi with both my daughter and a miscarriage). Haven’t been testing all the time. Tested a couple of days before I was due on, the day I was due on and 2 days after. Then I took another last week when it had been 3 weeks since I had sex around my ovulation window to 100% rule it out. Hadn’t had sex for a couple of weeks after my ovulation window as I wasn’t well so I knew there was no chance even if a late ovulation had occurred.

How you getting on? Have you been testing?

I think I better start up on my opks again incase it’s a missed rather than a delayed period. Don’t want to miss another ovulation.

BabyFeet92 · 10/08/2021 15:15

@Wanderdream I'm sorry to hear nothing has changed yet!

That's a good point - I didn't even think of starting to use OPKs again, but it makes a lot of sense. No point of potentially missing out on another cycle.

It's the same on my side. Still no period in sight. I tested yesterday, but I haven't tested again today. I figured I'll try to give it until the weekend and then test again if nothing has changed. I'm still having period-like cramps, but I've been having them since roughly last week Tuesday. They might be getting more intense though, I'm not sure.

It's all just very strange. I checked back in my calendar where I keep track of my cycles and I haven't been late on a single cycle since having my mirena taken out in Jan 2020. Early once or twice, but never late. To make it worse, I don't want to tell my husband I'm late, because he will get his hopes up. He was super bleak already when I didn't get a positive OPK and figured we are out for the cycle.

Yeah same, I think my husband was thinking if my period hasn’t arrived I must be pregnant but the test not showing yet. Had to explain clearly to him that it was literally impossible given how late I am!

Hey! Just wondering how you got on? X

BabyFeet92 · 26/08/2021 16:14

Hi @hopefulsunshine11

Are you in a similar situation?

I ended up getting my period, a bit more than a week later than expected. I guess I just ovulated late and that messed up the whole cycle, but who knows.

It was super frustrating to keep getting BFNs with no period, so I'm just glad to be in the next cycle now, although it seems like the OPK smiley is still elusive.

Hi, yeah I'm 3 days late. I'm never late and we are TTC. I'm so anxious now there's some thing wrong. I've taken about 7 tests! All negative! X
BabyFeet92 · 26/08/2021 22:08

Good luck! I hope it gets resolved soon and that it's good news.

I understand how you are feeling. I know so many couples struggling to conceive, that it's difficult not to get anxious when your body starts doing strange things you can't explain.
