How long did you bleed for?? - very early miscarriage

For anyone who had a very early miscarriage, how long did you bleed for and did you have cramps?

I only got a bfp this week and a couple of days later I've started bleeding. I bled with DS1, implantation bleeding which lasted two days, but I also had a miscarriage at the start of last month and bled for a week. So far I have been bleeding now for two days, no cramps though.

I'm just wondering what this is this time, whether it is implantation bleeding or another miscarriage Sad Sad Sad

Hey OP, didn't want to read and run. How many weeks are you?

I had a MC last month, got my BFP at the end of May and then miscarried naturally at 5+2. I bled heavily for 3 days and then spotting for 3 weeks!

Depending on how far along you are, contact your EPAU. They were brilliant with me and made the awful experience of MC a little better to cope with.

Sending hugs xx

Hi OP, I’ve had implantation bleeding twice and am currently having a miscarriage (third pregnancy). Implantation bleeding for me was very light and only really there on toilet roll. This miscarriage is like a VERY heavy period with cramps. Bleeding since early hours of yesterday and finally getting a bit lighter.

I think the lack of cramps is a good sign. Can you get an early scan at 6 weeks for reassurance?

Providence6 · 23/07/2021 19:38

Hi @Lulukate1, I really have no idea how far along I am as I hadn't had my period since my miscarriage at the very start of June. I must only be 3 weeks at the most. I am sorry to hear you miscarried recently too, I hope you aren't very badly affected by it? I contacted the EPAU the last time and they just told me to do a test in 3 weeks as I was probably miscarrying. Did you have any cramps back in May?

Providence6 · 23/07/2021 19:41

Hi @Houserenoqueen. Thanks for your reply... I am sorry to hear you are going through a miscarriage. It is very frustrating, partly because when I had implantation it was heavy enough- like a lighter period- and I did have cramps, but not bad. Last month when I miscarried my cramping was bad, but it didn't happen until the second day. This is now my second day of bleeding but no cramps. The kind of bleeding is similar to my first miscarriage though, so I am not gonna hold out much hope.

Were you having symptoms? Last month I was still getting nausea into the third week post-miscarriage! What a head melter..

Houserenoqueen · 23/07/2021 20:01

@Providence6 it’s all so confusing isn’t it. I’ve seen people say even heavy bleeding doesn’t necessarily mean MC, but with the cramps it does. I had no preg symptoms apart from tiredness and I’d had a scan the cycle I fell pregnant because I was having mid cycle bleeding.

I know it’s probably nothing I did but I had a REALLY stressful day at work on wed, and in my last pregnancy I took progesterone. Wondering if changing either of those things would have helped.

I’m having a scan at EPU on wed to confirm but want to crack open the wine tonight to drown my sorrows.

If you are miscarrying (and I really hope not) will you ttc again straight away?

Providence6 · 23/07/2021 20:40

@Houserenoqueen yes, I have seen people say that about heavy bleeding... though I definitely had cramping with my implantation bleed with DS1 but it wasn't bad.

And yes, I actually was reading about how to increase progesterone and I read that stress has the opposite effect. I went on a very long walk a couple of nights ago and I am wondering if that is what caused my bleeding to start..

Did you buy progesterone or was it something you got on script? I might look into that if this is in fact a miscarriage.

If it is a miscarriage yes, I would like to TTC again ASAP. Really what saddens me most of all is I feel bad for DS1- due to circumstances of work and where we live our wee boy doesn't have other children (family) nearby. He also doesn't have many cousins to start with. Some of my closest friends are my cousins and I would love him to have the same in life. But as God wills!

Providence6 · 23/07/2021 21:06

@Houserenoqueen I am actually still breastfeeding DS1 who is 14 months. I am wondering if that is maybe causing problems but I really don't want to stop. Might need to ask the Dr.!

Houserenoqueen · 23/07/2021 21:20

@Providence6 I am also breastfeeding my 14mo and wondered the same! I will ask at EPU on wed and let you know if you like.

The progesterone was on prescription. I’d had 2 failed IUIs before falling pregnant and my progesterone was low both times (and you can’t sustain a pregnancy with low progesterone).

Houserenoqueen · 23/07/2021 21:21

@Providence6 I’ve read you are v fertile after mc so hopefully that will help if needed. I totally understand the desire to give your son a sibling :)

Providence6 · 23/07/2021 21:31

@Houserenoqueen sorry for the potentially very dumb question but what does 'IUI' mean?
Oh that is interesting that you are breastfeeding too. My wee boy would never take a comfort blanket or a dummy so I am his sole form of comfort- I really can't envisage taking that away from him- hopefully I won't have to. If you could let me know after your appointment I would REALLY appreciate hearing what they say.

And yes, I am surprised we fell pregnant so easily again. I wonder if that generally continues to happen after the second miscarriage etc. though lol.

Houserenoqueen · 24/07/2021 18:21

@Providence6 yes of course will let you know on wed :)
How are you feeling today? Has the bleeding stopped?
IUI is a type of fertility treatment, basically the sperm is squirted in!!

Whatido · 24/07/2021 20:14

@ulstermourne Last Saturday I started bleeding after a faint positive test a few days before.. it lasted 4 days then completely stopped, my gp said to test again at the end of this week just to make sure which I have done and the line is even stronger than before the bleeding! Sorry not really any help but I didn’t have cramping with the bleeding x

ulstermourne · 25/07/2021 10:49

Bleeding stopped after two and a half days. Only very very mild cramping. I tested this morning and it's negative. I had myself convinced it was implantation bleeding. Feeling very low this morning, that's two in a row now. I am wondering if it is breastfeeding or if it was caused by me carrying DS1 on my back Wednesday evening for a walk... or am I low in progesterone? How would I know if I am and what can I do about it? I think I have to have three miscarriages before they will see me.

@Houserenoqueen did you have to get tests done for them to check your progesterone levels before they gave you it on script?

I've had 5 miscarriages ranging from taking a test to miscarrying a few days later. Those ones were just heavy bleeding for a week. One of them I was Spotting a few days before but no bleeding once I'd lost it. I didn't even realise I was Pregnant until I felt a pop and I looked down whilst in the shower and a loss at 9 weeks. My 9 week one I started spotting slightly with brown blood which gradually turned into bright red blood with little clots. I had a sub chronic haematoma too so at first I wasn't hugely concerned. Had a scan on the Monday which showed a miscarriage was likely and another on the Friday after getting admitted to A&E which showed the sac had collapsed. I had a 3 massive bleeds 2 days after that. With clots the size of my hand coming out. I thought it would ease up after that but it didn't I continued to cramp and bleed. That was the start of Oct and I didn't stop bleeding probably late November to early December. I had retained tissue until the beginning of November

Houserenoqueen · 25/07/2021 12:19

@ulstermourne yes. In my last pregnancy I paid privately to have hcg and progesterone checked when I found out I was pregnant. I can’t remember the numbers but my progesterone was v low so I got a prescription. You will need a supportive GP. Many don’t believe that progesterone helps. It is so frustrating that you need to have 3 losses before they will help. I’m so sorry the test was negative today :(

Houserenoqueen · 25/07/2021 12:20

PS the reason I had it checked was I have short cycle and short luteal phases which is linked to low prog and harder to conceive.

ulstermourne · 25/07/2021 14:07

Thanks for getting back to me @Houserenoqueen. That is really helpful to know. Are you in the UK? Was it expensive to get that done privately?
I think I will look into that!! Thank you so much!xx

@ulstermourne progesterone was £35. Not sure where you are but I got it done at The Path Lab in London. They do same or next day results :)

Providence6 · 05/08/2021 09:02

@Houserenoqueen thanks for letting me know this. I am in NI and from the reading I have been doing I have learnt that recurrent miscarriage care here isn't great. Did you have to pay to have tests done before you could get the progesterone?

Houserenoqueen · 05/08/2021 09:13

@Providence6 yes the blood test was £35 :)
