Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question.

I just was wondering if there was any single women our there who have had a baby on their own via a donar (IVF or IUI)?

Would anyone be able to share their story? Challenges they faced/ considerations I might not have thought of.

I'm currently about 5 years away from potentially deciding to do this but I wanted to start looking at everything early so that I'm well informed and not rushed.

My SIL did. She's gay and had always thought she'd meet a nice woman, settle down and they'd have a child together but it didn't happen. She was 44 when she decided that she'd better just go for it.
She used a friend as her donor....the agreement was that the child would know he was the Father and they would see one another regularly but that he would have no financial responsibility.

It's worked well so far. Her son is now 7 years old. His Dad is from another culture (we're white Australians) and it was important to SIL that her son know about his culture and have access to it.

She did find it very hard in the beginning though I won't lie. She realised the enormity of her choice the night she brought the baby home and she was alone with him.

She had a hard few years because it's only when you have the baby that you feel the weight that children bring. Obviously the love and everything is there but I well remember that feeling myself and I was with DH ...alone it's much more scary.

MIL has supported SIL a lot with childcare and general support. So I would say that if you can, surround yourself with support.

Have you seen the donor conception section? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/donor_conception
There's a long running thread somewhere on there with people sharing their experiences. All the best.

@fortunesFave thanks for sharing! Yeah there's no way to test drive parenthood so the thought of choosing to do it alone is daunting.

@StarryStarrySocks thank-you, I didn't! I don't always find MN the easiest to navigate.
