it took me a while to concieve after i had dd, i didnt use any contraception after having her, but my periods didnt properly regulate until she was 12 months old, then i had a miscarriage when she was 15 months....then i didnt get pregnant with ds until dd was over 2 years old

mummyloveslucy · 12/11/2007 19:38

gosh you're brave trying again so soon, anyway did you fall pregnant with your son quickley? I don't think that 6 months is that long realy but I know how frustrating it is. I tried for 2 years for my dd. I then had to have treatment. The doctors won't do anything unless you've been trying for over a year. Have you tried ovulation testing kits and maybe changes to lifestyle eg healthier diet stop smoking (if you do smoke) I hope this has been of some use. Good Luck

crokky · 12/11/2007 19:41

Have you been breastfeeding at any point during the time you have been trying to conceive? I found it impossible to get pg when bf and for about 3 mths after.

ScoobyDoo · 12/11/2007 19:41

My 2nd child did take longer than my 1st, with ds it was 3 months after i had come off the pill, then i fell pregnant 4 months trying for 2nd time but had a miscarriage then we tried again it did take 5 months after the miscarriage but i have a lovely dd now too.

MrsDomJames · 13/11/2007 15:05

Yes, we have been trying to conceive 2nd baby for 3 years now and ive just been put on clomid. Its so frustrating and puts a huge strain on the relationship and sex life. I'm 21 and all the tests have come back normal for me and my husband. x

Hi, took me 6 mths too for second (first was easy), a friend took 3 for first, 8 for second. Good luck and try to give yourself time before you get worried, 6 mths is well within normal.

sambrads · 14/11/2007 09:58

hi ya sorry i am only getting back to you all now my lap top was playing up!!
it took me only 3 months to get pregnant with ds . i thought that was long !!
it is so frustrating because they say you have the easiest time with labour and pregnany when your in 20 s but i am having no hope!
i also thought you would be more fertile after having a baby
why is it when you really want something you cant have it but if i really didnt want a baby i would get pregnant tomorrow!!!
all you girls have been great!!

6 months is no time atall.

Kewcumber · 14/11/2007 10:37

6 months is NOT "problems", average time for conception is about 9 months I think. Your GP won't refere you at your age until you have been trying for 2 yrs normally.

(Do understand its frustrating for you though)

sambrads · 14/11/2007 11:08

i would go private before i would waste two years trying and having no luck!
its so frustrating !!

I know how frustrating it can be but you seriously need to relax.

It can take a normally, healthy fertile couple up to a year to conceive, and your gp would not consider sending you for any tests until you have been ttc for at least a year, and even any reputable private clinic would send you away to try for longer if you've not been ttc for at least a year. Six months is not "having problems conceiving".

If you're only 22 you really do have time on your side. Relax, enjoy your baby, and when it is meant to happen it will happen.

sambrads · 14/11/2007 12:22

i no you might think i am being un reasonable and letting things annoy me but i have my reasons . i was not going to put this in cause i dont want sympathy but my father in law just past away after a brave battle with cancer and his dying wish was to have another baby so my son is not an only child like my husband so maybe you now realise why i am so determined!!

hi sambrads I think your doctor was dismissing the thyroid probs out of hand. They can affect ovulation, and therefore affect your chances of getting pg. I know my neighbour had an underactive thyroid while trying to get pg with number two and they found out her periods were 'anovulatory' i.e. she was bleeding but hadn't actually ovulated. This might explain why your periods are 'all over the place'. Try doing a google search on 'anovulatory' and 'thyroid' or something like that - and maybe find another doctor who's less dismissive of your questions.

I'm not sure what treatment my neighbour had but she did manage to conceive dc2 in the end - and she was only just under 40. So don't give up hope. I'm sure you will get your second child in the end.

mummypig · 14/11/2007 12:36

here's a quote from a site I found (www.ivf.com/ch12mbpg2.html)

Hypothyroidism
When your thyroid hormone production drops below normal, an intriguing chemical process leads to excess prolactin. Your hypothalamus also controls thyroid hormone levels by producing TRH (thyroid-releasing hormone) which tells your pituitary to make TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). When your thyroid gland cannot respond to these chemical signals, your hypothalamus senses that there isn't enough thyroid hormone around, so it produces more TRH, saying, "Get to work. We need more thyroid hormone."

Due to a unique chemical association, TRH also tells your pituitary to release more prolactin. The excess prolactin not only interferes with pituitary function but also exerts a direct inhibitory effect on the ovary itself. Taking a thyroid supplement to quiet your hypothalamus will usually correct this chemical imbalance and restore ovulation.

hope that helps

worzsel · 14/11/2007 12:58

if you can afford 'not to waste' 2 years trying then go private.

dooley1 · 14/11/2007 13:05

I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL
I think at your age your gp might want to investigate a bit more as 6 months does sound long for someone of 22
It took me 4 months to conceive no 2 and every time my period came I felt terrible
I know it's not a lng time for lots of people but when you want something so badly all the waiting and hoping takes it's toll no matter how short a time you've been trying for
Good luck

witchandchips · 14/11/2007 13:10

I'm 39 and have been ttc for dc2 for just under 2 years. Just begun to seek help as I think we were a bit in denial about it

OP posts:
