Referral to Fertility Clinic

Hello! Been TTC for a year and due to my long irregular cycles we have been referred to the fertility clinic with suspected PCOS, specifically the Aberdeen one in Scotland.

We have our 1st appointment booked, a video one, for 13th April and we will also get my partners semen analysis results at the same time. I'm also getting an ultrasound on 3rd April to have a look inside me for my ovaries etc, however this was the gp's request not fertility clinic.

Today, I received a letter from fertility clinic saying my bmi is too high & im not eligible for NHS funded treatment, does this mean they won't see me at all and our appointment won't go ahead? My bmi is 34, so it is too high and I am currently trying to lose weight. However is it just a matter of I'm ineligible for the likes of IVF just now or could I still get the likes of clomid if necessary? 😣 just so gutted as I thought we were getting somewhere!

Hi I'm sorry I don't know the answer for you but do you mind me asking how long it took from the GP referral to an appointment with the NHS clinic? We're a similarish area and in the same boat re BMI.

My dr put through the referral on 17th Feb, then we got our registration forms in the post about a week or so later, sent them back same day and then our appointment letter through on 6th March! So ridiculously quick but now stressing about my weight. Although it has shoved a rocket my arse! 😂 xx

Oh shit. We need a bomb up ours if that's the case 😂

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I'm sure you're super stressed at the moment x

Hi @mrsgtobe97, I've been under the care of the gyno for 3 years due to needing to lose weight, they won't refer you to the clinic until your BMI is under 30. It's worth phoning them up to see if the appointment will go ahead but unfortunately I don't think it will since they are aware that your BMI is over the limit. I was unable to get clomid when we went but we got all the tests which was done with the gyno.

Lol yeah I am a tad, a part of me thinks of sacking off TTC and focusing on losing as much as I physically can before our first appointment so I can show them I am serious! As I know serious weight loss may throw off my cycles even more. Me & my fiancé thought oh it's fine we will probably get an appointment in the summer 🙈🙈 lol! I'm sure even if we do need IVF there is a waiting list & we will be able to lose the weight in the meantime xx

Yeah the referral limit for bmi is 35 so we are fine to be referred, I think what the letter means is that we wont get treatment until my bmi is under 30, I will be phoning them on Monday just to confirm but I think that's the case. I know ivf it needs to be under 30 x

Should of also said in my last post, that I spoke to one of my pals who went to the same clinic and had an issue with bmi, they got investigations but then was told you need to lose weight for the actual treatment. I'm hoping we will still get to chat to them about it x

@mrsgtobe97 yeah, I'm not allowed to be referred to the clinic until my BMI is under 30 because there's 'no point because treatment can't start till your at that goal' so I got referred from my dr to my gyno who said that and she won't refer me till I'm under 30 which I've not thankfully hit but going private was definitely going to be a consideration due to having waited for 3 years. Keep us updated on how you get on! ☺️

Just off the phone to the fertility clinic & our appointment is still going ahead. The receptionist says the options will be to lose weight before treatment or self fund, however as we haven't even started investigations yet I'm not sure whether we can have them in the meantime and then treatment will just be delayed until my weight loss. 29 lbs to go ☺️ fingers crossed! I will get all the info I need at our appointment, will keep everyone up to date x
