How long to get pregnant after depo injection

Hi :) I wanted to ask if anyone got pregnant who had recently had the depo contraceptive injection? I just read it can take 9 to 12 months to fully come out of the system... I thought it was 3 months...

I had the last shot at the start of Jan and I wanted to be trying to conceive in the summer .

With my first two babies I was on the pill before, and it took 10 months to get pregnant after coming off it. The one time I wasn't on the pill I got pregnant first time so I'm a bit worried it's going to take a long time to get pregnant this time.

Of course nothing is certain that I'd even get pregnant again at all but I was hoping it would be quick as were hoping to relocate in late 2022 and would ideally have liked the baby here a few months before when I'm near a hospital. Worried I've screwed with my system now

Any experiences would be fab :) x

I'm sorry, probably not what you want to hear but it took 18 months for my periods to start and become regular again after depo. I had it out February 2019 and had a month long bleed September 2020, then my cycles were regular.

Not very helpful but - it varies! My DD's friend got pregnant when she missed her appointment back in March (don't ask why she was meeting her boyfriend in lockdown) because the school clinic shut with the schools and she forgot l, must have been approx 15 weeks from her last shot.

@PineappleSun was it three injection you had or implant? Just when you say you had it out sounds like implant?

@mootymoo that gives me some hope thank you as would 20 weeks from next shot date we want to start trying. Worried I have messed up my timings tho!x

Another one for whom it took 18months for my periods to come back I'm afraid. You can only wait and see how long it takes for you

PineappleSun · 01/02/2021 10:16

@Anony79 yes sorry, I made it sound confusing. It was the depo I stopped in February 19. I have also had an implant, confused myself.

Thanks ladies. Had you ever been on the mini pill before? My periods have always come back right away after both combined and mini pills but I guess the injection could be different? I've only had one injection i have no clue if that will make a difference. X

The injection is different in that the pill and particularly the progesterone only pill wear off in days or hours whereas the inject being stronger can switch your ovaries off for months. It doesn't negatively effect your fertility in the long run but it might take a while to ovulate and then menstruate. Having said that of course lots of women do fall pregnant within the first few months.

I had a period 9 months after I missed my injection. (So 12 months from the last actual injection).
I got pregnant the following month once my period had returned.

justchecking1 · 01/02/2021 12:17

Took 16 months for me coming off depo.

With stopping the pill my periods regulated straight away

HarleyQuinn21 · 01/02/2021 12:24

It took three months for my periods to become regular and I got pregnant about 15 months after that BUT I wasn't TTC so hopefully will be a lot sooner for you op Thanks

Anony79 · 01/02/2021 13:30

Thank you ladies. Im so annoyed with myself for not really researching I just took it on face value that it was 3 months and that was it. 😣😣

@HarleyQuinn21 do you think once periods are regular you ovulate again and could become pregnant? I have no clue... x

My periods came back 6 months after my last injection. And they were all over the place, I think it took about a year to regulate.

Careylisa · 01/02/2021 21:25

Took me exactly a year to get pregnant, 6 months before periods returned properly.

Melvin2021 · 29/06/2021 14:31

It took my periods 6 months to come back and they were so regular but it took over 2 years after my last injection to get pregnant. My advice to anyone is dont get depo if you definitely want to be pregnant quickly although I realise it's not the same for everyone. I hope everyone manages to concieve soon goodluck!

PinkSkyPurple · 29/06/2021 14:37

It took me over a year after the last injection
