Has anyone got pregnant whilst breastfeeding?

I'm convinced I've conceived this month..

I just feel pregnant and have similar symptoms to my first and only pregnancy (took 3 years to fall pregnant)

DTD 10 days ago as was feeling unusually in the mood 🙈

Here's the weird part, I've not had a cycle in 6 months, since my baby was born. I do have PCOS but it's well managed.

Basically what I'm wondering is, is it a possibility with a seemingly lack of cycle?

Did this happen to anyone else? Or is this just my body getting ready to ovulate/get my first AF

I've done a test yesterday and it was neg. think I'm just wishful thinking. Didn't want to get obsessive again and here I am 😳

I had two periods between babies, the periods were about 6 weeks apart. I had gone back to work before I conceived, so longer between feeds.

Yes. Twice.

steppemum · 19/01/2021 12:31

yes.
my brothers are only 11 months apart as the 'can't get pregnant while breastfeeding' is a myth

Yes.

I have 4 friends who all accidentally conceived while breastfeeding. 2 of them hadn't started having periods again yet.

Definitely got pregnant while breastfeeding but not in the first 6 months. Had bleeding for nearly 3 months and after that periods were all over the place.

I remember reading that any woman's most fertile period is about 9-10 months after giving birth (Happened to me!)

I got pregnant while bf, Ds1 was 8m old (and still very much only experimenting with food). I'd had 2 periods.

I did

Breastfeeding is only effective as a contraception in a very limited number of circunstances:

  1. You are exclusively feeding breast milk, never mixed feeding with formula.
  2. You are feeding on demand, never to a schedule, including through the night.
  3. Baby has not yet starting weaning onto solid foods

Even then it definitely shouldn't be relied upon as your only form of contraception. If your baby is over 6 months it's very unlikely that bf could prevent pregnancy.

I got pregnant whilst breastfeeding at around 15 months, but my periods started again around 9 months.

Yup. It happens.

Yes, 11 months between two dc. I hadn’t had a period and wasn’t being as careful as I (we) should have.

Haiyaa · 20/01/2021 12:06

Yes 100%, the “you can’t get pregnant whilst breastfeeding” bit is one of the biggest myths going. May possibly have been true many years ago where nutrition etc was not so good, women feeding exclusively and on demand 24/7 but now the body has plenty of energy to spare (even if it doesn’t feel that way 😂).

If you are not pregnant (and do not wish to be) then I suggest a progesterone only pill such as desogestrel, an IUD, or condoms. Any sort of “rhythm method” will be even less reliable whilst bf.

iMatter · 20/01/2021 18:59

Yes. 12 months between my two.

Exclusively breastfeeding ds1 every 3/4 hours and fell pg with ds2.
