What do you count as a small age gap?

mrssunshinexxx · 28/12/2020 12:09

Well under 18months ? @Bleepers

Im going to have 21 months and I'm quite nervous about it. We started trying at the smallest gap we'd be OK with and got pregnant first time. At the mo it's still early days and I'm mainly struggling with feeling so tired and sick with a little one

danigrace · 28/12/2020 13:06

@Bleepers our age gap is just 2 years, I started freaking out a bit when I was pregnant but we ended up loving the age gap so much that we're currently trying for the same again for baby 3. It's just enough that the older one understands (mostly) that it's "their" baby and they look after them and are gentle, but close enough that they can play together and be good friends

@Bleepers sorry you are feeling crap hope it passes soon I had a relatively good pregnancy last time with the usual first trimester nausea I'm hoping to be the same again
@danigrace great to hear no regrets !
We are trying next cycle if I catch first time which I've heard it not unlikely when your body has already done it before and BF then there will be 16months

Do either of you know if I would be entitled to maternity pay again if I don't go back to work inbetween

maternityaction.org.uk/advice/pregnant-during-maternity-leave/ this has a lot of explanation on the topic

Bleepers · 28/12/2020 18:43

@danigrace thank you, this is good to read. I'd just forgotten quite how much I loathe the first trimester...

My eldest 2 are 13 months apart and I wouldn't change it for the world. They are so close. Because they were my first 2 it didn't seem hard either although looking back the 3.5 year gaps were easier.

I didn't go back between maternity leaves and it meant I had to claim maternity allowance rather than SMP. Still got the same amount though.

We started ttc when DS was 6 months. He is 11 months now and still waiting for BFP. Thought we'd catch right away as did with DS but no luck yet. We want a small age gap so they both have a ready made playmate and close bond (although I know this is a romantic notion and may not play out like this in reality!)

Welshy11 · 28/12/2020 18:51

I had two boys with a 21month age gap. Hard work but entirely worth it for the bond they have now. All I would advise is try not to make any routine changes when the baby is here. So when I was around 7 months pregnant we started giving my eldest alone time to play- found prepared stuff entertained him more such as setting up a shape sorters, this way he was used to alone play time whilst I was feeding!
