Pregnancy test accuracy mid-cycle, but months after last unprotected sex

Hi all,

A few weeks ago my GP told me to take a pregnancy test given I had varying signs indicative of early pregnancy.

I’ve not had sex for a few months, am on the pill and haven’t missed any days, and have had ‘periods’/withdrawal bleeds as normal, so it seems unlikely but I took the test.

I did the test straight away, ignoring the instructions to wait until the day of your expected period (which was a week away), assuming this didn’t apply given if I was pregnant I’d be at least 2 months along. The test was negative, and I forgot about it. However, I mentioned to a friend I’ve felt sick a couple of days this week and she asked if I’ve taken a pregnancy test. I’m now wondering if I should have waited until day 1 of my period to be sure of that test result!

Does anyone know if the test would’ve picked up the relevant hormone if I was pregnant? (It feels silly even asking given I’ve been having periods but google tells me this isn’t impossible.) Happy to do another test but if I have to wait until my next period that’s 3 weeks away :(

Don't worry, if you haven't had sex in two months then the test would show positive. The instruction to wait until the first day of your period is in case it's too early to test; that can't be the case for you.
