Does anyone know anything about a link between Low Progesterone and Low amount of follicles? I've just had a scan today and I have 3 on right ovary and 1 on left ovary. Are LP and Follicles linked? My DH has low sperm count, just feeling like we will never have children naturally 😭 has anyone had this as well? I'm only 30 and I have been trying for 15months. Lady doing the scan said she is writing to my GP with the results, but it doesn't look good does it?

Progesterone isn't really linked to follicle numbers - I've done 5 rounds of IVF with lots of blood tests used to track hormone levels related to follicle numbers.

Progesterone rises until ovulation that's true and a progesterone level of over 30 is indicative that ovulation has taken place but it can't really tell you how MANY follicles You may have had

Really the hormone which you need to look at is e2 levels - I've had IVF cycles cancelled before because e2 was too low compared to number of follicles they could see which meant they were likely to be poor quality. E2 also needs to rise in relation to number of follicles to indicate that the egg inside is maturing - I believe a level of 200 per follicle is what they are looking for

What cycle day did you have your scan?

What she is looking at is your antral follicle count is how many follicles are visible on each ovary at the start of each cycle - most women in their 30s have 10-15 so yours does seem low but every month is different and next month you could have a lot more

Thanks @ivfdreaming that's really helpful, I was on day 24 of my usual 28 day cycle. So 4 follicles altogether. All my bloods fsh etc came back fine, just progesterone was at a 9 but I was day 25 of my 28 day cycle. I thibk ivf/icsi is the route we will have to take. I think because we both have fertility issues it's worrying me more

@Ardessa im in the same boat although a fair bit further down the line. We where originally referred for IVF due to male factor (azoospermia) however on my first follicle count scan i only had 9 follices despite only being 30. They tested my AMH level and it was low in relation to my age. The scan I had pre my first round of IVF my follicle count had improved to 15 and I got 10 eggs. Unfortunately they where poor quality and only 1 made it to implantation and it was a BFN. We are starting our second round soon.
Getting your AMH tested might be a better indication of your ovarian reserve as the follicle count can change from month to month and is also quite subjective depending on the radiographer.
