Is this a chemical pregnancy?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm feeling confused.

Yesterday morning I took a pregnancy test at 8am and got a feint positive. We've been trying for 5 months so I was delighted.

Last night at 8pm I started bleeding. Sort of like a light period, no clots, but I'm still bleeding this morning. Figured that was probably a chemical pregnancy?

This morning I did another test - don't ask me why - at 8am and the line is loads darker and definitely a 'positive' (i.e., wouldn't have required a 'line eyes' thread!). I've attached the photos for you.

With my first I continued to have periods at 5 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks, so I'm really unsure about what's happening.

According to the app I'd be 4 weeks and 3 days if there's still a pregnancy.

Not sure what I'm asking really, just feeling confused. Chemical or still hope? Would a pregnancy test have got this much darker after a bleed if chemical?

Top test = 7th June 8am
Bottom test = 8th June 8am

Hi

I don't think anyone would be able to tell you that at the moment. I think if I was in your position I would wait a few days and if still getting BFPs and bleeding, contact your local EPU. I had a period followed by BFPs when I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy but I also bled from 5 weeks basically until 18 weeks with my DD.

At this early stage, only repeat blood tests will be able to tell you what's going on.

I'd say there's still hope but only time can tell. It's not unusual to bleed throughout pregnancy so doesn't automatically have to mean a CP or MMC. Especially if your line got darker!

Just remember HCG takes a while to build up so no point testing daily - check again in 3 days to see if the pregnancy is still progressing. Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks both. I sort of realised it was silly to post even when I was typing as there’s little anyone can say. It’s just the only thing you can do, I guess.

Both points taken on board - I am out of tests now so at least that should stop me from testing tomorrow! Will test again on Thursday and see.

Appreciate your responses and sorry for being daft.

Don't be sorry, totally understandable that you want some advice. I think it's always worth a call to EPU. In my experience some will turn you away until you're about 6-7 weeks, some will be extra cautious and scan your / take bloods.

What colour is the blood? With an ectopic, it's often a very dark prune coloured bleed so just watch out for that.

Not-so-brief update.

I continued to have positive tests and called the EPU yesterday to go in for a scan.

I popped in at lunch time and had an internal scan. They could not see a sac, but said that was not unusual for 4w3d. I then had a blood test.

They called last night to say the bloods were back:
Progesterone 3.7 (should be 50, apparently)
HCG 55 (should be 1000, apparently).

They were surprised I hadn’t already had a negative test given the pregnancy was so early, but to continue to take pregnancy tests and I should get a negative result within a week. Last night I consoled myself with a MASSIVE glass of wine.

Tested this morning hoping to see a fainter line and it’s the strongest of the lot. WTF is happening?! Any similar experiences gratefully received… I would like to be pregnant but was also kind of relieved when I was given the hormone count yesterday, because I’m an evidence based person and – judging by how poor the numbers are – I accepted that this is not a viable pregnancy and would not continue. Knowing is so important.

Has anyone else had numbers like this!? Should I be cautious just in case (I won’t drink now until I get a BFN). Or am I a lunatic?

Tests in order from Sunday (top) to today (bottom). All taken with FMU.

It's so frustrating isn't it. I want to go to sleep for a week and wake up next Saturday to test!

At the very least the EPU could offer you another blood test just to make sure your numbers are dropping.

If they don't drop on their own or they slightly increase, you will need more intervention - assuming of course that your levels haven't doubled etc.

But if you still have levels around 50, then the test will be dark anyway. Give the EPU a call and check with them. If you're still getting positives in a few days then maybe ask for bloods to see what is going on.

EmbarrassingMama · 11/06/2020 15:49

That's a great shout - I should have suggested that on the telephone yesterday. No harm in a second lot of bloods to confirm either way. Thank you.

I've had 2 chemical pregnancies and bled heavily from 4 weeks 3 days (so essentially a late period in that respect). Your EPU sound like they've been helpful already, as my nearest one won't see women until over 6 weeks.
Could you phone your GP to ask about bloods / advice? My GP is very kind and helpful, so I appreciate not everyone has this.

EmbarrassingMama · 11/06/2020 22:22

Thanks very much. I was quite surprised when they agreed to see me too to be honest. I thought they would just give me some telephone advice on when to expect a negative test. My GP surgery aren’t great. I will wait till Monday and go in for more bloods if nothing changes.
