Thought my ovulation test was a pregnancy test

Morning all,

I have an eleven month old baby, who is breastfed, and I had my first post pregnancy period last month. I’m now cycle day 35 and still no period, although I feel crampy and keep rushing to the loo thinking it’s starting. I have an older child so know that periods can be a bit all over the place post birth, especially as I’m still feeding on demand, but this is long even for me, so thought I’d better take a quick test this morning to rule it out. Well as you can see strong lines (I then panicked and took a few more - the one with only one line was one I dipped in water to see if they were broken!) but I then realised that I had been using ovulation sticks and don’t have pregnancy tests in. Does this mean I’m ovulating,
or can ovulation sticks pick up that you’re pregnant?

TIA

They can definitely pick up pregnancy hormone and will show stronger then when you ovulate! Definitely take a pregnancy test!

You can get a LH (the hormone that is picked up on those ovulation tests) surge just before your period.

I'd say you're probably just due on very soon as backed up by the cramps.

If you haven't started AF soon, then try a pregnancy test but at this stage I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks both. I’ve ordered an actual pregnancy test and will wait and see what’s going on.

So I had ran out of pregnancy tests and had read about opk showing positive for pregnant because they can't tell the difference between LH surge and hcg . So I thought what the hell and used one. It was positive and now I'm 19 weeks x
( obvs I then went and got a proper pregnancy test 🙂)

So this made me curious because I've heard this before and wasn't sure if it was true, so I just went and did an OPK (already for a BFP earlier in the week) and BAM! Yeah, I think you definitely could be pregnant. Let us know how you get on!

Like pp said, lh rises before a period so it could be either. Yes opk can pick up a pregnancy but it cannot confirm one. Hopefully you get the answer you are looking for in a few days. (p.s. I had darker opks than this before AF has arrived in the past)

NannyPear · 08/05/2020 04:47

They are suuuper strong positive opks. Yes you can get an LH surge right before your period but with lines like that and technically late on your period I'd be leaning towards pregnancy instead. Let us know, OP!

Oh my bad... I saw it the opposite way round and the thought the control was the test line... 😬😬😬... Hope you are wanting baby no 2 😁

I don’t know anything about ovulation tests but I had a longer cycle first time after pregnancy (it was around 35 days) when I’m usually regular as clockwork 30 days. It did settle on the next cycle

CrystalEssenceHall · 08/05/2020 13:33

Test arrived this afternoon and it’s negative 😅 Hopefully this means that AF will hurry up and get here.

Or maybe ovulating! So don't panic if it's another 2 weeks before it arrives.

CrystalEssenceHall · 08/05/2020 17:22

Good point - it feels more period like than ovulation time though (although I supposed post pregnancy everything is probably not like it used to be!)

Did you take your pregnancy test early?
