Can you have an ectopic pregnancy without a positive pregnancy test?

I started bleeding on Saturday, which I assumed was my period as it was bang on time. Quite dark purple blood and lots of it. I was looking because was hoping it was implantation.

I use a menstrual cup so only found out when I went to empty it yesterday evening that it was empty and I hadn't bled at all yesterday (third day) which has never happened before.

Woke up this morning with shoulder tip pain radiating down into my shoulder blade.

I've just seen the GP and she says it can't be an ectopic pregnancy without a positive pregnancy test and sent me away. But said if I'm still worried in a few days to go to A&E.

We don't have an A&E in my County at all so this would be a drive of around 90 minutes to the nearest one.

Just wanted to hear from anyone who has had one or is medical, that they agree with the GP that there is no way that it can be an ectopic pregnancy a) this early and b) without a positive test.

Then I'm just having a weird period and slept funny on my shoulder.

Am worried and don't know what to do now.

I'm assuming now that I was worrying unnecessarily but I still haven't bled any more. So I had 48 hours of bleeding and so far 36 hours of nothing.

And my shoulder pain is just on one side - left - and is enough to make me wince. Occasionally radiating down to shoulder blade and sometimes up to the neck. Also getting occasional abdominal twinges. Nothing is excruciating.

If not ectopic then any ideas what this could be? I would only be 16dpo/ CD4 today.

Yes I would say an ectopic requires a positive pregnancy test.....shoulder tip pain whilst it is the most popular symptom whenever you google ectopic is actually really rare as the shoulder pain comes from internal bleeding which has reached your diaphragm and most cases are caught well before that point.....I've had two ruptured ectopics nearly died twice and believe me the pain is unbearable but even then hadn't reached high enough internally to cause shoulder pain

Thank you for your reply and I’m sorry to hear about what happened to you and I’m glad you’re ok.

The only webpages I saw this morning said that it isn’t known why there’s shoulder pain so I think that’s why I panicked. But it’s good to know that it’s incredibly unlikely to be the cause of the pain when it’s so soon after any possible pregnancy.

Just my body doing weird things I guess and stress doesn’t help.
