TTC while partner is on blood pressure meds

Hi - I'm hoping that someone will have been in a similar situation to us!

We are TTC DC2. DS1 was conceived first month of trying aged 32. Now im 35 and we have been trying for 14 months. All tests have come back fine. However, yesterday we were told that the meds my partner takes for his blood pressure (calcium channel blockers - Amlodipine) could be altering the sperm and making it impossible for it to fertilise eggs.

So my question is, has anyone successfully conceived while their partner is on a medication like this? Im not sure if im now pinning all my hopes on this being the issue and explaining why it seems impossible to concieve.

Im starting to get desperate and give up hope of ever having another child!

Hi @hopefulno2,

We're just giving this thread a bump for you to get it back into Active Conversations - hopefully some Mumsnetters will be along shortly with some advice and support. Flowers

JoMumsnet · 13/02/2020 12:04

And another bump for luck.

professorastrocat · 16/02/2020 10:15

Just bumping this again for you in case someone can help, too. I'm similar situation and just got Bfp last week. Dp is on blood pressure meds but not sure what they are. (Bad partner I am!)
Did the GP say the issue for your partner was specific to his exact medication?

Donnat89 · 16/02/2020 20:29

Hi hopeful,

My
Partner is also on these and until I saw your thread had no idea they would impact on fertility.

I did some research and a study has shown it only seemed to impact on rats on dosages at 15mg or higher a day .

I mean if you've had all the tests done and I'm assuming your partner has had tests too they would know whether or not it has affected his sperm ?

The link to the study is here - www.jecajournal.org/article.asp?issn=1596-2393;year=2013;volume=12;issue=2;spage=75;epage=81;aulast=Akinlolu

Take a look

hopefulno2 · 16/02/2020 21:11

Yes, that was what i saw too, @Donnat89 - but i also then read here; www.armghawaii.com/infertility/male-infertility/

"Calcium channel blockers can alter the sperm cell membrane so that they cannot fertilize an egg, despite being normal in every other way." and the study showed that this alteration doesnt show up in a semen analysis. They only realised a connection between the drug and the sperm when they were doing iVF treatment and the sperms weren't able to penetrate the eggs.

Have you managed to conceive with your partner on this drug? Maybe im just fixating on this being the issue as im so exhausted of trying to figure out what is making TTC take so long!

hey @professorastrocat - that is great news, congrats. Had it taken a while?

@hopefulno2 we did conceive last year after about a year and he's on 10mg of it , he is going to speak to his doctor next week to see if he can be put on something That doesn't affect his fertility.

We have now been trying for nearly a year since our miscarriage last year so hoping for a BFP soon x

hopefulno2 · 16/02/2020 21:33

@Donnat89 - sorry to hear about your MC. I asked my other half to see the GP last week. They sat in front of him and googled it and said it is probably fine. i dont think they understand what long term TTC can be like, esp if something like this drug is causing an issue. I really hope you get a BFP soon!

Donnat89 · 16/02/2020 21:35

@hopefulno2 to be honest they probably aren't that sure themselves and study's seem to suggest anything under 15mg is fine ?

Non the less you can ask for a change if meds ?

Thanks hun I hope
You do too ! Xxx

Sunshineand · 16/02/2020 21:37

Is this the only med he's on? There are so many BP meds to choose from. How old is he?

hopefulno2 · 17/02/2020 09:20

@Sunshineand he is 45 and i am 35. It is just very annoying as we conceived our son first try. Really wish i hadnt left it so long to try for the second. I know i shouln't complain as it is amazing to have one child. I just find it hard to not obsess about why it isnt working after 14 months.

@hopefulno2 How did it go please?

We have the same issue - my partner is on BP medication (Lasartan Potassium) and we have been trying to conceive for 3 years.

Did your partner take a BP medication whereby you were able to get a Bfp ?

hopefulno2 · 10/02/2021 20:04

Hi @JessicaLB - yes, I’m currently 40+3 and waiting for the arrival! He was still taking the BP meds when we conceived. It was ttc month 21. Fingers crossed for you

Best wishes for the birth.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 10/02/2021 20:09

Okd Luck Jessica. I hope you get your BFP soon🤞🏼

timeforanother1 · 10/02/2021 20:26

Just found this thread.

We are ttc #2 and I didn't consider dp's blood pressure meds could be an issue.

Congratulations op that's a long waited for baby!

hopefulno2 · 10/02/2021 22:08

@timeforanother1im not sure if they are or aren’t an issue. I kind of felt they must be given we conceived month 1 first time and then money 21 second time after he took the BP drugs. I’ve clinics seem to think some BP drugs do interfere, but we got there in the end so maybe it just makes it more tricky?

timeforanother1 · 11/02/2021 14:00

@hopefulno2 and it's making me also wonder as before he was on them 4 years ago we were pregnant first try.

This time it's been a few months and still trying- we are dtd at the right times as I'm tracking etc. I just hope our wait isn't as long as yours! Shock

Shannon1209 · 19/11/2024 18:01

I know this is an old thread, but hoping you'll see this....

Were you doing IVF while TTC.... Did you have eggs the fertilized abnormally or not at all? Trying to figure out why mine all fertilize but not in a normal way... wondering if these BP meds could be the issue.
