How do people know when they ovulate?!

Hi all, just wondering how you know which day you ovulate?! I have a rough idea from Ewm and + ovulation tests but I'm not sure how you pin point it down to a day?! Am I missing a trick?

I used a few of the free apps (which I appreciate aren’t overly accurate). They all predicted ovulation on the same day and that day I had a weird twinging pain in my right abdomen which I am almost certain was ovulation!
