who the hell has told you that guff?

TwigTwoolett · 04/10/2006 19:01

supplements that a woman can take that are 'supposed' to be helpful in optimising conception on top of the standard pre-natal vitamins:

Baby aspirin (less than 81mg) daily throughout cycle

Vitex Agnus Castus from period to ovulation (although some theories that can be taken throughout cycle but should be stopped when pregnancy established)

Evening Primrose Oil (1500mg to 3000mg per day) from period to ovulation (do not take past ovulation)

Vitamin B6 (100mg to 200mg) most B6 supplements have a lot less so should ask specifically for this

I remember reading that cough medicine thins the cervical mucus, making it easier for sperm to meet egg.

copied from fertility website

INCREASING CERVICAL MUCUS

Cut back on caffeine and don't smoke!

Drinking at least ten 6oz glasses of water a day.

Evening Primrose Oil: 1,000 IU per day should be taken
from Cycle Day 1 to Ovulation.

Flax Seed Oil: 2,000 mg per day from Ovulation to AF.

Red Raspberry: 1,000 mg daily: Start anytime in cycle.
Can be taken during pregnancy until a month prior to labor/delivery.
Strengthens the uterine lining which in turn lengthens luteal phase

Grapefruit Juice

What Twigtwoolet said.

I've seen you on the conception threads. Due in March (hooray!), but had conception 'issues' and was trying for a long time.

I know you feel like you want to do everything you can to optimise your chances of conception, and how stressful it can be, but don't give yourself a hard time about not doing everything - half of it's old wives tales anyway.

fwiw, I got PG with hardly any CM. I get ecsema (which I still can't spell), and am a generally a bit of a shrivelled prune.

Wishing you all the luck in the world

Juicylucythe2nd · 06/10/2006 13:14

Desperate.

I did as follows:

Pregnacare - Every day
Fish Oil Supps - Everyday

EPO - CD1 to OV
Grapefruit juice - During OV
Guafanesin - During OV

I raised my bum after BD'ing for 15-20 mins.

I substantially cut down my alcohol consumption in the 2 months running up to my BFP. I don't smoke.

I also took Royal Jelly, but only for about 2 weeks before I got a BFP, so don't know if it had any effect atall.

Obviously as the other posters have stated, don't know which ones are old wives tales and which actually helped, but I'd do it all again for a BFP

Piffle · 06/10/2006 13:16

specific cough syrup
It needs to be guifanesin as the only active ingredient
The month I got preg I took
EPO
grapefruit juice
and the robitussin cough syrup
Plus used pre seed lubricant
and did legs in the air
Well I was desperate
And I hve no idea if that stuff helped but...

Piffle · 06/10/2006 13:19

actually we also did get two puppies

Juicylucythe2nd · 06/10/2006 13:22

BTW Sainsburys do an own brand cough med with only Guafanesin as the active ingredient.

jabberwocky · 06/10/2006 13:25

I did:
during OV:
cough syrup (specifics mentioned in previous post)
grapefruit juice

every day:
baby aspirin
EPO
fish, flaxseed, borage supplement
B12
prenatal vitamins

Don't forget to get loose boxers for your dh!

shortcake · 06/10/2006 13:29

I think you need to have sex!!!!!

Piffle · 06/10/2006 13:31

shortcake very funny, I'd been having lots of sex for 3 years to no avail
Within 2 months of trying these things I got pregnant.

shortcake · 06/10/2006 13:33

Sorry - just seemed to be the only ingredient missing!!!

MellowMonsta · 06/10/2006 13:43

.........and keep your legs up in the air afterwards..just for 5 mins or so. Worked for me, was trying for 6 years, done this both times I conceived.

Whoowhoobewhooooooh · 06/10/2006 14:08

The thing that made the difference for us was having sex from CD6, then every 2-3 days until CD22 (27 days cycle). And.... this is important... not getting obsessed with when I'd ovulated (as I had every other month).

I think the NHS guidelines pretty much run along these lines too.

Obviously if you have fertility/ovulation issues it's different...

Spagblog · 06/10/2006 14:18

You need to orgasm after his ejaculation. Spasms help suck up the little swimmers.

cityangel · 06/10/2006 15:13

As much bd as dh can take without putting him off!
Orgasm and legs up where possible!

Multivitamins and Omega 3 - pregnancy brands

Trying grapefruit juice (hate it) but I have noticed a difference

Up to OV Vitamin B6 50mg - although maybe I should double that? after OV B6 10mg
Up to OV EPO 1000mg

Drinking more water less alcohol

Pre-seed every time as dh likes it. Haven't got around to putting it in first though.
Does everyone use a whole capsule each time?

Went for accupuncture last month and have it next week - no idea if it helps but worth a go

Bought the Toni Weschler and Kim West books

Aromatherapy - bath with rose essence and sage essence

To do list

Keep forgetting the cough syrup - will get some today

New ones on the list to try now are baby aspirin and Flaxseed oil

jabberwocky · 06/10/2006 16:07

Oh, yes, lots of water! Keep that hydration level up.

Juicylucythe2nd · 06/10/2006 16:38

I'd be careful with the aspirin.

When I mentioned it on another thread, I was advised against taking it without talking to my doctor first by quite a few MNers.

You may want to leave that out for now.

Juicylucythe2nd · 06/10/2006 16:40

BTW - the pink grapefruit from Sainsburys isn't as vile as the other stuff

God, starting to sound like Jamie Oliver!!!

I'm sure other supermarkets do pink grapefruit juice too!

desperate2bmum · 07/10/2006 08:48

thanks everyone again for your very valued posts. the reason i ask is because sex isnt an issue we make sure we do plenty of that but i dont get much cm and i didnt even ovulate last month.

OP posts:
saf1 · 09/10/2006 20:46

sorry to butt in but...what is the pre-seed you mention? and where do I get it?
thanks

wannaBe1974 · 09/10/2006 22:29

ok, I totally understand that people feel the need to optimise their chances, but surely remembering to take this vast armoury of pills/potions/lubricants can only add to the stress that is ttc. I know I'm potentially not in a position to talk as we've effectively now given up trying after 18 months with no success, but surely the best thing to do would be to relax and make love.

oh yeh and get a puppy, lol.
