Did anyone else have a really slow MC at 5 weeks? And has anyone conceived quickly after a D&C?

Hi there,

I'm still looking for reassurance about the MC that I'm having. My HCG levels are dropping soooo slowly and I'm not really having any significant bleeding.

I've had a scan which showed nothing in the uterus other than some fluid, potentially blood. They couldn't see the tubes so it could still be an ectopic pregnancy that is resolving on it's own via an MC, but why is this taking so long.

My first blood levels were taken 9 days ago and were 389 (or around that - I've had so many numbers in my head!). They then went up to 470 7 days ago. Then 5 days ago they'd dropped to 377 and then yesterday they'd dropped to 277. My progesterone has dropped from 30 9 days ago to 7 so it's all moving in the right direction, but does anyone have any experience of such a slow MC?

I'm really terrified that I will need a D&C and at 38, really scared that it will take me ages to conceive. We've given ourself until March next year as I can't live my life getting upset every month. It's not good for my gorgeous DD, my DH or myself. So we decided to draw the line next year. So I don't want to wait to try again.

Has anyone ANY experience with this? Please??? It's driving me mad...

I had delayed miscarriage at 11 weeks 8 years ago when I was 28. Id been trying for 9 months. The foetus was 9 weeks. I took the option of d&c over pessary or waiting. Had no idea having a d&c (if this is the same as womb evacuation) could be cause for not conceiving. I had 1 period and then got pregnant with ds (now 7). Sorry to hear your news x

Hi, I had a mc in April at 7 wks. It then took another 7 agonising wks for hcg levels to drop to normal levels. I was never given the option of d&c (they couldn't see anything in my uterus) just injection or conservative management. I went for conservative management as the injection sounded awful and they said it wouldn't necessarily drop any quicker.
now on second cycle ttc. Only 3 dpo but having light cramping pains similar to last time. Hoping it's implantation but know it's too early.

Your hgc levels are really low so I hope you're "back to normal" soon. I never got any answers as to why it took so long. I was just told it was "one of those things".

Sorry no experience of slow mc. I opted for d and c and conceived a month after it. It was fine, the d and c that is. I couldn't bear the thought of a drawn out process and wanted it over and to move on.

kat - yes I have had a very slow m/c at 6 weeks, it took another 5 weeks for my levels to reach zero. I never really lost the pregnancy, but reabsorbed it slowly. For me I had two days of bleeding, then none after a second scan which showed sac slightly smaller, then no bleeding during the 5 weeks of testing every day until my hcg levels finally gave me a negative pregnancy test.

I have met several women on mn who have had slow falling hcg. It is hard going for repeated blood tests all the time. With mine one, once I reached hcg of 200 they stopped the blood tests and just left me to test with a home pregnancy tests to see when the levels fell to non-pregnant levels.

As they have not confirmed for you if the pregnancy was a uterine one, do take note of the risk of an ectopic and if you have symptoms of an ectopic that worry you, then go and insist that you get re-scanned.

Don't be worrying about erpc or d&c they will not do one while you were so early and your levels dropping.

I hope for you that you get a faster drop over the coming week or so, but rest assured that it should continue dropping and you should be ok.

I had first MC in November 2011 was as a normal period for me, heavy and painful etc, my second MC in February was however a bit long winded, suspected twins at 5 weeks. I was bleeding for around 34 days.
It's taken my body a long long time to recover.

Oh my hcg levels also went up and down throughout, I'm sure you will be fine, unfortunately some damage can't be healed, your body will prepare and repair itself I'm sure.
I understand how difficult this situation is.
Take care x
