breastfeeding and regularity of periods

We are TTC naturally, without much hope, after our first IVF baby (with a MN supported pregnancy!!). DD is 11 months and I am still BFing, about 2/3 times in the day and a hundred at night (it feels like it! Probably 2 or 3 times at night)

I have had 2 periods, 1 v small one, then another 29 days later ( a monster period, never bled like it!). Based on that i thought i was just going to slip straight back to my very very reguar 28 day cycle. It is now 31 days since last period started, and of course, my mind is going mad, and sleep is difficult. It is SO unlikely that i could be pg given DH's sperm quality, that I am sure I can't be pregnant.

So, the question is, how regular should my periods be while I'm still BFing? Is it normal for period to be "late"?

The basic answer to your question is yes, very normal. I am breastfeeding, my periods came back around 15 months. My first period was very light, and my second one was a monster period - my heaviest ever too. Since then my cycles have been 28-35 days, but I no longer BF at night (4 times a day now). In general the more BFs you give, the more irregularity you should expect.

Thanks islandisla. That's what I thought, sad and mope-making as it is. Well, I'll continue to stick my head in the sand until it appears!!

I think 11 months is really good for periods to return when breastfeeding so don't mope too much! We are TTC too... my friend keeps telling me, a few months does not matter in the big scheme of things! If your periods are started, then your body is kick starting into being fertile again... it won't be long!
