every pg is different and testing 10dpo doesnt not guarantee an accurate result. waiting until your period is late does not make you any less pregnant. tests like clear blue and first response claim to be accurate, but READ THE SMALL PRINT! only something like 43% of women get an accurate result at 10dpo. only 93% of women get an accurate result at 14dpo ffs!

a shocking amount of pg's get a bfp then their period on its due date, why put yourself through it? even internet cheapies are a rip off, because you never quite believe the result, no matter what it is. so you end up getting an expensive one anyway.

its always best to wait until your period is due (better still, til its late) save yourself the heartache and a bit of cash!

Grin

but then I once did 6 tests in 2 days as I didn't believe them.

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 13:38

fab, I speak as a reformed testing addict. its so easy to get caught up in the excitement, but a little patience goes a long way.

seeing a bright blue/pink line/dot is so much better than one you have to hold out of the window, to the left, to the right, up a bit, down a bit.... there it is... is that pink/blue or grey? just squint your eyes now....

been there, done it. I could've saved myself a fortune and a lot of tears!

If it's any comfort Lissie, you convinced me years ago. We were on a waiting to test thread together abt 3 years ago. I was wasting a lot of time and energy on testing. You stopped me and I have never since tested before my period has been late.

So rest assured you are not shouting into a black hole!

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 13:42

yay!! Grin and how are you now? I still have my HPT fund that every few months I empty and buy myself something. if we ever have another baby I shall use the cash saved to buy something for him/her. it all adds up!

I have never understood why peolpe test so soon, when it is less accurate. Like you say, it wont make you any less pregnant waiting those extra few days or weeks! I am on my first Cycle of TTC #1 and I will not be testing until I am late!

Avocadoes · 29/12/2010 13:55

Are you still TTC Lissie? If so I wish you all the luck in the world.

I conceived abt 3 months after you stopped me early testing (I finally broke at 16 dpo and ran out and bought a test in my lunch hour... then cldnt get hold of DH so ended up waving the wee covered stick excitedly in the face of my poor colleague!). DD2 turned 2 last week.

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 13:58

moffit, stay here, if you are tempted I shall keep you on the straight and narrow. I understand why people want to know early and get carried away, especially since youve got ads tellin g you that they are 5x more accurate. but the fact is, it takes up to 10 days for the egg to implant and start producing HCG. then HCG has to rise to a certain level before it shows up.

and there are few things more disheartening than seeing a bfn. at least if you wait til your period is late you have a better chance of seeing a BFP.

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 14:03

avocadoes, what a lovely story Grin at you waving a wee stick in your colleagues face. i did that when i got my bfp with ds! we are still ttc, my mc total is now up to 12 Sad but I never test before 14dpo. wish I could leave it later tbh, but my circs mean I cant.

on the plus side, ds is 5.5 now and an absolute star!

bump - spreading the word!

OP posts:
TigerseyeMum · 29/12/2010 17:58

I tested the day after mine was due and got a BFN, so would that have been too early?

I am still waiting.... Hmm

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 18:04

possibly tigerseye, HCG is a funny thing and rarely does the "double every 48hrs" thing. when I was pg with ds I got one BFP at 4w and never got a bfp from the doctors, only on blood tests. how late are you? when do you think you ovulated? some women ov different days each month. ive been known to ov on CD7, then the following month on CD20.

OP posts:
TigerseyeMum · 29/12/2010 18:10

Well, my cycle has been 32 days then went to 34 days for 2 months and I am now on day 36; but I have only been off the pill for 6 months.

I think I ovulate the same time each month but I have not been tracking ovulation, I didn't get a 'sense' of ovulating this month, when normally I do.

Maybe I need to track it cos we gave it a damn good try this month Grin and I have a feeling of crampiness but nothing doing, so I am a bit confused.

It was evening when I did the test though, and it was a Tesco budget one, if that makes any difference Hmm

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 18:13

ah, the pill can bugger you up for a bit. I would leave it another 5 days and test in the morning (doesnt really matter what you use, they are all pretty much the same)of the 5th day. if still nothing then a trip to the doctors may be in order, just to be on the safe side.

OP posts:
TigerseyeMum · 29/12/2010 18:25

Thanks, I am a bit bloaty and sore like I was last month so I think it's brewing.

A BFP would be a nice gift for the first week of 2011 though :)

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 18:41

definately Grin fwiw, early pg symptoms are v simillar to period ones (which is partly why people get carried away)

ALL YOU SENSIBLE LADIES

I agree on so many levels and am a total convert to NOT TESTING BEFORE DUE my reasons being (in no special order):

  1. I'm ridiculously sensitive to progesterone. like, I cant take the pill because it makes me feel nauseous, I feel nauseous in the days leading up to my period for the same reason; so when I conceive, I know about it very quickly...and through this i know that naturally many pregnancies are destined not to 'take' and only time will tell whether your embryo is viable...even if you are pregnant, that early, it means very little.

  2. I am definitely a 'late implanter'; with both pregnancies I did not test positive until the day before I was due, even on a super early genius tester (genius only to the manufacturers who make all the money from the poor sods that spend a fortune to POAS when they were destined to come on anyway.

  3. As per above; only one person gains from early tests, the folks that pocket the change from the early tests.

TigerseyeMum · 29/12/2010 18:59

Ooh Lissie Grin Fingers crossed xxx

MiasMARY · 29/12/2010 19:22

As a veterran ttc'er with multiple miscarriages under my belt I have to say I always found early testing half the fun!

Each to their own and all that..

I have to say I miss the anticipation now we're not having any more dc.

Early testing was good fun for me. I say this in the kindest possible way but just because it's not a good idea for you lissie doesnt meant it's not a good idea for anybody.

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 19:28

but, it gets the hopes up etc. I know that there will always be people who want to ytest early, and they dont have to take my advice. but it is advice. and it makes my teeth itch to see to see threads such as "i ovulated yesterday, would a CB show a BFP now?" followed by a zillion pictures with NO LINE or if there is a line, its an evap line because the wee stick has been fished out of the bin a week later.

i feel that many people arent in possession of the facts and think that as soon as they ovulate they can test, when it isnt the caes.

OP posts:
MiasMARY · 29/12/2010 19:33

Oh I agree about people stupidly early although I got abfp at 7dpo myself--

It's just exciting fun isn't it. I understand where you're coming from, it's shitty not to be able to enjoy the anticipation of early pregnancy :(

Dropdeadfred · 29/12/2010 19:35

I have to es early so i can sart my medication asap...i do wish early hpt's didnt exist really in a way...but needing to know to make lifestle changes/risk assessment is important too

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 29/12/2010 19:40

dropdead, thats a seperate issue though. some people do HAVE to test early and need monitoring. but the majority of people dont. the fact of the matter is that too many people test before they should because they cant wait. its as simple as that.

mia, its v sad.

OP posts:
kat2504 · 30/12/2010 13:31

I try not to test stupidly early, new rule is to wait till the cbfm starts flashing so only a couple of days early.
In recent months I've prefered to find out I'm not pregnant with a test, when I know I'll be at home, at a convenient time. Rather than by suddenly starting my period at work and having to deal with the disappointment.
Anything before 11 dpo is probably quite pointless so I agree with you to a certain extent.

RudolfThePinkNosedReindeer · 30/12/2010 20:29

Lizzie good call!! I tested 4 days after period was late this month, got a faint positive line, temps plummeted and AF started the next day. Wished I hadn't bothered POAS, just caused me a world of pain and upset-you'd be surprised how much you can get your hopes up in a day.... :( next time I'm waiting for at least 18 high temps to try and avoid the heartache.
