So, been ttc#2 since Dec. Irregular cycles. got bloods done last week on day 24 and progeterone 7.5, fsh Lh normal, note from lab said inconclusive! s/w one of GP's at my work (im a nurse) and she said not to worry as obviously took bloods too early. However what is confusing me is that last Sat evening i had a +ve opk and then got bloods done on the monday.

So what i am really wondering is if ovulation happened on Mon would it be too early to show on progesterone level?? Confused

Hiya Smile, after recently having Day 21 bloods to test progesterone levels I was told to go on Day 21/22 - 7 days post ovulation and not a day earlier, as that is when you get the most accurate reading. Hope thats helpful??

I was also told anything over 30 indicates ovulation.

Hi Lib,

Irregular cycles are more often than not caused by hormonal imbalances. In this regard a common culprit is a condition called polycystic ovaries. You should also have an internal ultrasound scan done to see if your ovaries are polycystic.

What were your LH/FSH levels and more importantly when were these tested?. if it was not on day 2 the result is meaningless.
Usually with PCO the level of LH exceeeds that of FSH.

Your LH and FSH need to be checked and compared against each other on day 2 of the cycle (as your cycles are irregular this test can be done according to calenday days).

A level of 7.5 would not indicate ovulation and would also likely suggest that your LH and FSH are out of sync.

OPK's are totally worth avoiding if the menstrual cycle is irregular anyway. These kits measure LH and assume that a rise in LH is immediately followed by ovulation - not true. Also if PCO is present the kit would read the excess level of LH common to this condition. Would therefore suggest you refrain from using these as of now.

thanks for info attila!

Interesting what you say about opks as two gp's (my own and own i work with) have told me they are worth using Confused

Not entirely sure i have pcos as i don't really "fit the picture" My periods were very regular after i had ds then as soon as we started ttc#2 they went all over the place. LH FSH normal but tested day 24.

Chatting with my gp later so will see what she thinks.

cheers

My progesterone levels were like this, and I had regular cycles! On the cycle before my first IVF I got an opk+ for 3 days up to a Saturday, progesterone tested the following Wednesday and it was 19! I don't have PCOS, but it turned out I was producing antibodies to my own progesterone and have "poor ovulation." My ovaries finally got round to releasing an egg later that week. I had ivf, with a lot of progesterone support and it worked. There's an interesting thread on fertilityfriends about progesterone issues, I'll try and find it. You may have to register to see it but it's worth a look.

Hi Lib,

LH and FSH should never be tested on day 24; it needs to be day 2. This is because these two hormones kickstart the ovulation process.
If GP continues to be clueless or unhelpful I would ask for a referral to a gynae.

thanks holly will check it out! attila GP is really good actually, not having a go at her. Spoke with her and she suggested LH FSH day 2 and further day 21. have also discovered iron stores low so that's not helping matter. Next step we are going for private referral. Smile
