Food waste bin in an apartment

Hello. I want to have a food waste bin/compost bin but I live in an apartment with no balcony or garden. I also do not know where to start with it! So I could get a food waste bin in the kitchen to put veg scraps in. But then will it break down enough in there to become compost? I've looked into worm bins/bokashi bins but not keen. Has anyone successfully done this with no outside space? Any advice appreciated.

Isn’t there a food waste bin in your communal bin store? Surely you just put your kitchen scraps in a caddy in the kitchen then regularly put it in the big food waste bin downstairs. That’s what happens in my flats.

@BitOutOfPractice no communal food waste bin here! We just have normal recycling bins and a general waste bin which goes to landfill. Although my council are thinking of introducing food waste collection in the future which is one reason I want to start. I'm jealous you already have it!

Oh that is tricky then. I can see why you want to do it then if all your good waste is going to landfill.

I don’t think I’d want a composting bin in my flat though so I think you might just need to wait till the council gets its act together. What a shame.

I know you aren't keen on bokashi bins, but I'm pretty sure they are the most apartment-friendly option. Do you have a plan for where the compost will go?

@BitOutOfPractice I do have a relative with a compost bin where I could empty my food waste bin when it's full. So that's one option in the meantime.

@DaisyWaldron why are bokashi bins better for apartments? Do you know?
Not got as far as what to do with compost yet! I was just thinking if it's actually possible first. I grow some plants in boxes on my juliet balcony and have some indoor plants, or there is a small communal outside space by my building.
