Rather bemused by the woman on the news asking how people would ‘survive’ without heating errr…. We didn’t have central heating installed until I was 16yrs old in 1983 and we all ‘survived ‘ pretty well. I’m all in favour of extra financial help for the vulnerable but everyone else can just PUT A JUMPER ON!

We didn't have central heating until I was about 15. We had a gas fire downstairs and I don't remember feeling the cold when I was really young.
When I got my first flat there was no fire nor central heating. It was Baltic and I was thoroughly miserable in the winter. Those ice patterns on the window were pretty though.

You can put on ten jumpers, hats, gloves and ten pairs of socks but that cold damp air is still miserable, still gets on your chest and feet and hands are still freezing. And how the hell do we get anything done in the house wearing all that gear?

We shouldn't have to live like this in this day and age but here we are. What can we do?

We had no heating other than a gas fire in the lounge and portable paraffin heater in the bathroom until I was 11. It was bliss when we moved and had double glazed windows and central heating.

Now we have an air source heat pump, triple glazing and very good insulation.

We’ve had solar panels in other houses and will buy solar panels for this house.

I absolutely hate being cold, it’s miserable.

And I'm pretty sure you would have had open gas or coal fires. So I expect it's very unlikely you had no heating.
