Hi, I have been waiting 20 years in temporary accommodation to be housed in permanent house, I am a single mum to 3 children 2 whom have autism. I was in a dv marriage and manage to get out of that 8 years ago. My current temporary accommodation lease has expired and I need to be out in 2 weeks, I have gotten the solicitor involved and the council have made a direct offer for a permanent home to me as a discharge of duty. The property they have offered me is suitable for myself and my children the only issue is it’s in the area where my ex in laws live. I haven’t had any contact with them in years and I avoided bidding for a property in that area. I am really panicking as they were really nasty towards me as I had to get the police involved with my ex. I have been told I need to accept the property and I have 21 days to ask for a review . Can anyone advise me please, thank you.

I have been in temporary accommodation for around 6 years and was offered a direct offer from the council.
The issue is it's 2 hours away from my children's school, my job and my support network.
I was not aware that a direct offer could be outside of my borough nor that I would have to take it. Not to mention the property was at the back of a dark alleyway, no door number next to a pub. Inside was leaking water onto electrical switches. When I asked about this I was told the landlord is in India. I have now been issued a notice to quit for not accepting the place.

They can't offer you something that's dangerous and refuse to help your further?

They have done.
I have made a complaint and awaiting response this is just a long story cut short.

Just accept it.

Too late declined already.
I was not aware of all the rules and protocol

does anyone know how the council advise you of a direct let? I’ve been told that they are going to house me through a direct let and not through a bid. I was wondering how they inform you when they’ve got one to offer. Does the housing association contact you direct (my council no longer own any homes) or do they write and let you know? I’m in TA and the post often ‘goes missing’

@AmyThoms

I would expect that they will contact you by phone ? or maybe email.

I know Devon Home Choice says clearly all over their website that applicants must make sure that their contact details are up to date / available.

Hi I’m been offer a direct offer from my council for 2 bedroom ground floor for my son medical reason .i already live in a 2 bedroom with 3 kids in 1 room.other is my sons who’s 24 .what do I do I’m I confused .

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 27/10/2025 00:04

What ages are the other children ?
and what sex.

Does the Council have a responsibility to offer bedrooms for all of them ?

Why is your adult son not being offered a one bedroom place of his own - does his medical condition require him to live with an adult to care for him.
If so could / would the Council offer him a 2 bedroom property so he has a bedroom for a carer ?
