Planting out christmas trees

Just wondered if anyone had sucessfully planted out a rooted tree after Christmas and how they did it. I have tried to do this a couple of years ago and it went brown and died . Do i need to keep it in at night and put it out during the day? and if so, how long for.... Also do i keep it in the pot after it is used to the outdoors or plant out asap.... I also live on the coast - am i wasting my time

if they are grown in the ground and dug up then too much root is left behind. you might be lucky and one would grow but i haven't had any joy. this year we bought two, one v small pot grown and i'll repot it and try to keep it going.
