Anyone recommend me one- and are there any offers on?
I like very dry- hate anything sweet.

What kind of budget?

Waitrose and M&S (Oudinot) own label champagnes are good, ime. But my own personal favourite is Veuve Clicquot.

Not a big fan of prosecco so can't recommend.

deaddei · 18/12/2009 22:24

I too love Veuve Cliquot and as I only need about 3 bottles (fun Xmas [hmmm]) may succumb.
Everyone seems to rave about Prosecco but I've never found one I like.
I'll have a look at Waitrose's tomorrow.
Thanks!

Tescos premiere Cru
Waitrose Blanc de Blanc

but nothing beats a bottle of Bollinger

Champagne. Get a no-dosage one (Ultra brut) if your like it bone dry. Barnaut do a very good one (a small R-M firm sold at Lea & Sandeman) and do Laurent-Perrier (more pricey, but there is a deal out there currently). I'd go for the smaller firm, and I think it's a nicer champagne.

Other ones have some dosage, but are dry: any principally pinot noir champagne will always taste dryer than a Chardonnay driven one, so try also Egly-Ouriet or Henriot.

Prosecco does tend to be more sweet, so you would be better off with champagne. I'll let those who know more than me make suggestions.

almondfinger · 18/12/2009 22:54

The tesco finest is a v v good champangne, far better then Perrier Jouet and half the price. Ruinart - delicious. Partial to Veuve aswell. If you can afford it buy proper champagne. Prosecco - no.

moondog · 18/12/2009 22:56

Nowt wrong with Prosecco at all. It's also lighter nad less alcoholic generally which is a good tihng at Chrristmas.Drop into somewhere like Majestic and ask for help.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 18/12/2009 22:58

Think they've gone bust, Moondog

moondog · 18/12/2009 22:59

No they haven't! i was there a few days ago spending £££££££!

ilovemydogandmrobama · 18/12/2009 23:00

Oops, not Majestic. Sorry

MarthaFarquhar · 19/12/2009 08:49

how about an English sparkling wine?

I know that sounds ridiculous, but there are some fantastic ones out there as long as you have a champagne budget.

I was when I was given [http://www.waitrosewine.com/230201783/Product.aspx this]] for my birthday but it is so much better than lots of the generic champagnes.

MarthaFarquhar · 19/12/2009 08:49

try again

BaronessBarbaraKingstanding · 19/12/2009 08:56

I love Prosecco, but i do prefer slightly sweeter to v dry.

Aldi do a really lovley Prosecco (feel I shuld be but I'm not really as it is v nice).

ProfYaffle · 19/12/2009 09:14

I've got one of each! hic

PhaseolusNativitatus · 19/12/2009 09:18

The Times and The Guardian make some interesting recommendations, especially at the less costly end of the market.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the M&S Prosecco is very good at the moment, too.

BettyButterknife · 19/12/2009 13:18

I love Freixenet! Think it's really underrated. And about £8 a bottle, you're looking at the same sort of price as prosecco.

FolornHope · 19/12/2009 13:20

i dont like prosecco

like freixnet

tulpe · 19/12/2009 13:24

Yes would rather go for cava than prosecco, tbh.

Hulababy · 19/12/2009 13:28

Re champagne - I like Veuve. Dom Perignon and Bollinger def over priced and over rated IMO, Veuve has much nicer taste. I still like Moet as well though.

Re, non champagne fizz - agree Friexnet is nice, I also like Beringer. Think cava is nice than presecco too.

English sparkling (can get in Waitorse) is lovely and IIRR very dry. Was really nice. Not as cheap as other non champgane fizz though.

CaptainNancy · 19/12/2009 15:10

Veuve Clicquot is reduced by £5 a bottle in sainsbury at the moment.
I think Moet & Chandon, Lanson, and Piper Heidsieck were too...

ReindeerInaSkoda · 19/12/2009 15:22

Waitrose Cava is da bomb

Tis cava everytime for me (over Prosecco that is, not, er, all day every day. Honest. Hic!)
