Is the cake bit supposed to be frozen too?

Am contemplating a choc one for xmas pudd as seems I can make it before and freeze, then bung it in oven for a few mins before eating.

But do I need to get it out and defrost for a bit before cooking? wouldn't the ice cream melt too much? I don't actually recall ever eating it, so can't remember how t'is.

help me please...

The cake should not be frozen, otherwise you would not be able to eat it.

Fresh cake, or defrosted as least. Just make sure that the ice cream is completely covered by meringue otherwise it will melt

You can make it and freeze it.
Make teh sponge.
Get a bowl and line it with clingfilm and fill it with icecream, then cut up your sponge so it fits in teh top of the bowl and freeze separately.
Take the cake out in the morning to defrost, put it onto the cake 'bowl and turn it all out onto a tray, then make meringue and spread all over icecream and blast in hot oven for a few minutes. You want the meringue browned but not cooked IYSWIM.

Even nicer if you mix christmas pudding/cake with the icecream and use christmas cake as a base as well...
