When people say ham and pickels - what are pickles?

I have bought

Gerkins (does anyone actually like these?)
Pickled onions
Pickalli
Baby beetroot

Is this right?
What have I missed?

sluuuuuupppp!

Branston tomato and jalapeno pepper relish. I made it sound like a salsa but it isn't - defo a relish. Tried to link because is often out in BBQ season but I think it is nice with ham too and you seem to be able to get it all year round now which you couldn't before.

Oh what about onion relish?

poinsettydawg · 13/12/2009 15:07

I love gherkins.

Agree that you need to get tasty chutneys in there, not just vinegarised vegetables. A bit of sweet as well as sour.

catinthehat2 · 13/12/2009 15:13

Peppadews are very nice, and they WILL disappear. I like pickles/chutneys to be colourful as well, not just shades of brown. And with intersting bits in them.

Alarmbellsring · 13/12/2009 15:18

I've seen peppadews with cream cheese in, would they be nice?

Off to look for that relish and some more chutneys

/I love gherkins too. Especially really tiny sweet ones with lots of spices. I like my pickles to be interesting, not just blow your mouth open vinegary. I also like the aged borretane (sp?) onions which are sort of mellow. Good onion chutney is wonderful too, and brilliant with loads of things. Red tomato chutney also lovely. You can sometimes get really nice hot mango chutney (try a farm shop type place?)

Spiced red cabbage is lovely. And I quite like pickled eggs too (but only with fish and chips!)

Who knew I was a pickle aficionado?

poinsettydawg · 13/12/2009 15:21

bleurgh to pickled eggs. How could you

Alarmbellsring · 13/12/2009 15:23

Pickled eggs are lovely - but with chips, def not with cold ham at xmas.

Home made pickled eggs are truly fabulous.

With cold ham my mum (pickle/chutney queen) would serve (in her Tupperware lazy Susan of course):
Branston,
pickled onions (small silverskin and proper large strong ones),
small gherkins and possibly large chunks of pickled cucumber too,
green tomato chutney
probably fancy peach chutney, can't remember who makes it but it is the same people that make fancy tinned soup I think.

Spacehoppa · 13/12/2009 15:42

Goes well with ginger!

WilfSell · 13/12/2009 15:52

The stench of kimchee is not a cabbage. The most popular kind is deep red and looks like this. The smell is of gingery garlic with a fermented undertone. Very strong, and will overpower the fridge unless tightly encapsuled in many layers of zipper-lock bags.

Apparently it is extremely healthy for you, but I love it because it packs a lot of flavour and umami in a small (no fat, almost no calorie) package. I particularly like it with pasta and tomato sauce.

My other favourite way of eating is is in lettuce parcels with rice and korean barbeque beef (bulgogi). Sooo delicious!

Alarmbellsring · 13/12/2009 20:56

Would you have pate and chutney? Or just one or the other?

Alarmbellsring · 13/12/2009 20:57

I would love to try Kimchee SofaQueen
