Still plenty of time, though I reckon they are best made at least 1 month in advance (I use the Delia classic recipe).

I had difficulty in getting currants as well, and I made mine over a month ago - very strange.

CO-OP was my saviour in the end

The kids and I made our cake last night. It went really, really well. I am very grateful for all the wrapping advice which was very helpful and I had a fantastic glow of satisfaction when the cake came out of the oven after 5 hours and looked and smelled fantastic.

Then dh offered to transfer it to the cooling tray for me and in a moment of supreme comedy stupidness, did an awkward juggle with the cake/tray and ended up chucking both of them on the floor!!!! I was like this and then like this and then this

But I did get my sense of humour back after a (longish) while and we are making another this morning after dh has been to the shops to get the replacement ingredients. I'll keep you updated...

I used the Nigella Chocolate fruitcake referred to elsewhere on this thread last year and it was fab! I forgot to make a cake until about the 20th Dec, marzipanned and iced it against all the rules 2 days later and my Mum who is a professional cook thought I must have made it weeks before.
