Digital Photography - presents to support DH's new hobby

DH and I bought a new camera just before DS was born in 2007 specifically to take better pictures of our PFB.

He spent many, many hours researching cameras and we have been very pleased with the Canon G7 we bought.

In the 2 and a half years since, DH has gotten more and more into taking pictures with it and recently, he's joined a group at his work who do a monthly photo competition and has been getting very excited about taking the picture for his first entry.

I've bought him little camera related gifts in the past (a gorillapod and lens cleaning kit etc) and I wanted to get him something else this year. I was considering something like a subscription to Digital Photo Magazine...

Thing is, I know very little about photography and have no idea if this would be any good or not or if there are better magazines out there and I was wondering if anyone on here had any advice?

The only thing I have discounted so far is a photography course as he works very long hours, sometimes Sundays too and doesn't have a lot of time for courses after work. Plus, he is very shy and probably wouldn't enjoy going on his own. We have a new baby due in December too and I'm going to need him!

Thanks for your help...

Dh bought me a SLR digital camera for my birthday, for x-mas i would like new lenses, a macro lense would be good so i can take better pictures of bugs and things. I would also be happy with a bigger camera bag to put all my bits in.

I hope dh reads this thread and then he will know what to get me .

The G7 is not a DSLR though is it? Is it a compact?

TheBlairSnitchProject · 06/11/2009 17:08

That's why I thought the magazine subscription would be good. I thought it might be a good way for him to see lots of other peoples photos and maybe get some tips on how they were done at the same time...

I think I may have to bite the bullet and hope he doesn't say "but I could have looked this up online"

I had a really long list and then realised it isn't a DSLR....

It's a compact. At the time we thought we wouldn't make full use of a DSLR and decided to save the money for the baby we were about to have.

I'm due to have DD in 6 weeks so the budget won't stretch to a DSLR this Christmas either I'm afraid

Following on from the magazine subscription. Is he a member of ephotozine? It's a magazine on-line/forum type thing, and theres an annual subscription you can do.

I sent my DH on a 2 day course to learn how to use his camera.
He had a lovely time, went out and about round London taking arty shots. Came back very inspired.

I love bob books. They do hardback books of your photos and you can arrange them/design the pages however you like. If I had the time and money all my photos would be recorded this way! They do gift vouchers.

Today's the voting day for his new photography club at work and he's winning with his first ever entry. I'm so proud

He won!
