Home-made decorations

I might need to post this in crafts but I'm going to make decs for the tree with DS using salt-dough.

What do I use to varnish them so that they keep? I would really like to re-use them year after year.

And I if I collect pine cones and decorate them with him, will they last?

Thankyou! We've just got our own place so we're starting from scratch and don't have much to spend.

I'm heading down to Poundland for baubles but I would like something a bit more personalised.

Yeah I was going to buy a box of plain ones from Poundland and then get DS to decorate them so they are unique but easy enough for him to make.
