Anyone catch this tonight?

I watched it properly and that means without a laptop on me knee and it was really fab and exciting. But then I haven't seen the original or read the book.

What did you think?

I enjoyed it. I gather that the female spy was a character inserted for TV in case us women got bored (which I find a tad ironic and insulting) but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Do I gather that her "death" at the end was staged then?

WishItWouldSnow · 28/12/2008 22:27

Oh sorry I don't know the original at all. I was confused about her death and thought that her appearance at the end was him having a 'vision'??

Yes her death was staged - so she can go and do her bit for Blighty in the war I suppose. I really, really enjoyed it - haven't read the book - but as dh who has - just kept saying 'there are no women in the book!' that's probably a good thing.

WishItWouldSnow · 28/12/2008 22:37

Ohhhhh! I see.
Kind of glad really as I liked the soppiness just a little bit

I liked the removing of the Penry-jones shirt just a bit too

WishItWouldSnow · 28/12/2008 22:46

He was (a-hem) rather nice wasn't he?

Piffle · 28/12/2008 22:49

Scrummy man

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 28/12/2008 22:50

Mmmmmmmmmm yes he's lovely - unfortunately I read an interview with him in the RT which revealed that he is in RL a total twat. Such a shame - but a girl can dream eh?

WishItWouldSnow · 28/12/2008 23:12

I'll let him go then.

Thought this was about the best thing I have seen on TV this Xmas. Like others on here I am so glad we went for a Wii which has provided a welcome rest from the Disney channel

ChristMarsSleighdy · 28/12/2008 23:29

Gah!!!!!!!!!!! I missed it!

EffiePerine · 28/12/2008 23:30

great book

they put a woman in it?

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 28/12/2008 23:32

Yes - with kissing and everything!

Dh was outraged but I just went with the flow - it was a ripping good yarn!

EffiePerine · 28/12/2008 23:35

I am appalled

IIRC a suitable demure female doesn't turn up till about book 3

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 28/12/2008 23:42

Oh dear it's a good job you missed it then - she wasn't demure - she could drive and she had a hairpin and knew what to do with it!

ScummyMummy · 28/12/2008 23:47

She was an extremely cool woman. I would probably have been outraged had I read the book but was suckered in rather charmed by her and related more to the staory because of her, just as the adaptors planned. Predictable and easily led, moi?

AndATigerschickInAPearTree · 29/12/2008 15:18

I thought that it was very good - exciting, gripping etc, etc ...

But it didn't bear much resemblance to the original film as I remember it (granted I've only seen it once and that was about 15 years ago ...) and I know that the original film took liberties with the book (which I haven't read).

So, one for the likes of me who just like a good story well told and are too worried about the origins of it all - not one for the purists.

Oh - RPJ was a pleasing sight - especially since he's not in Spooks anymore .

AndATigerschickInAPearTree · 29/12/2008 15:19

aren't

mrz · 29/12/2008 15:52

Nothing like to book or even the Hitchcock version but I enjoyed it

summer111 · 29/12/2008 17:32

I really enjoyed him it too..He's married to Dervla Kirwan (aka the voice of the M&S food ads) They have two kids and live a quiet life in the countryside - not a bit showy at all - seems like a good catch to me!
