I just spent the weekend with my family as we are all apart at Christmas, adn my little bro decided to organise a gingerbread house competition.
Have a look, tell me who you think should win, and share your pics as I am feeling nosy!

(not saying which is mine, but the ages were 23 bro and his gf, me at 30, dsis at 34 and her dh and dsis at 37...)

Chirpy... was it your family who had the hilarious sausage comp in the summer?

ChirpyGrinch · 16/12/2008 14:02

God no, that wasn't me (altho a small part of me wishes it was!) they werwe good though!
My recipe was

Ingredients

FOR THE GINGERBREAD

  • 250g unsalted butter
  • 200g dark muscovado sugar
  • 7 tbsp golden syrup
  • 600g plain flour
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 4 tsp ground ginger

Method

  1. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Melt the butter, sugar and syrup in a pan. Mix the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger into a large bowl, then stir in the butter mixture to make a stiff dough. If it won't quite come together, add a tiny splash of water.
  2. Put a sheet of baking paper on your work surface and roll about one quarter of the dough to the thickness of two £1 coins. Cut out one of the sections, then slide the gingerbread, still on its baking paper, onto a baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough, re-rolling the trimmings, until you have two side walls, a front and back wall and two roof panels.

Although we all found it quite sticky adn had to add a few handfuls of flour and knead a lot.
s hard to say how long it will take.
Bake for 10 minutes and then check every 5 until edges start to go dark golden brown. Cos of differetn shapes i

Icing to stick is made from 2 egg whites and 500g icing sugar.

edible for a week apparently

They are all great, but number one is the winner in my book

ChirpyGrinch · 16/12/2008 20:30

And number one is....

Mine
Took about an hour
2nd one is my 37 year old sisters (whose heart was not truly in it, I fear) took her about 30 to 45 mins
3rd was my 34 yr old sister and her DH, who are very outdoorsy took them about an hour

The 4th one is my 23 yr old borhter and his gf.

It took them just over 2 hours.
